President Donald Trump slammed Swedish environmental activist Greta Thunberg on Monday, calling her “just a troublemaker” after her second failed attempt to reach Gaza aboard an aid flotilla. Thunberg was arrested by Israeli authorities and deported after trying to breach the blockade of the Palestinian territory.
“She’s no longer into the environment, now she’s into this… She needs to see a doctor. She has an anger management problem,” Trump told journalists in the Oval Office.
Thunberg, now 22, had joined over 400 activists attempting to sail to Gaza, but Israeli naval forces intercepted the flotilla on Friday. More than 130 participants were deported to Türkiye over the weekend, while others, including Thunberg, were sent to Greece and Slovakia.
Thunberg vs. Trump: A Long-Running Feud
The Swedish activist and the former president have been trading barbs for years. Trump previously criticized Thunberg in 2019 for her “anger management problem” after she was named Time’s Person of the Year. Thunberg, in turn, wittily updated her social media biography to read: “A teenager working on her anger management problem.”
Despite her arrest, Thunberg continued her activism online, posting about Palestinian suffering, but her latest post sparked outrage.
Embarrassing Social Media Blunder
Thunberg shared a post on Monday condemning the treatment of Palestinian prisoners:
“The suffering of Palestinian prisoners is not a matter of opinion — it is a fact of cruelty and dehumanization. Humanity cannot be selective. Justice cannot have borders.”
One of the images in the post, meant to illustrate Palestinian suffering, actually showed Evyatar David, an Israeli hostage tortured by Hamas. David had been starved and forced to dig his own grave, which Hamas proudly filmed.
Social media erupted, calling Thunberg’s post “grotesque” and “reckless”, highlighting her failure to verify the image before using it to push a narrative. She later deleted the post without comment.
Leftwing Allies Continue to Misfire
While Thunberg flounders, global politicians and activists continue to mischaracterize the conflict, with some calling for recognition of Hamas-controlled territory without securing the release of hostages. Even UK opposition leader Keir Starmer faces criticism for moving toward recognition of a de facto Hamas state.
Trump’s blunt assessment of Thunberg’s activism underscores his larger critique of leftwing performative activism, which he sees as disconnected from reality and often counterproductive to genuine humanitarian outcomes.
“She’s just a troublemaker,” Trump said, summing up the fallout.
As the Gaza flotilla saga fades from headlines, the contrast between Trump’s direct action diplomacy and Thunberg’s symbolic, often misinformed activism could not be clearer.
