German Chancellor Friedrich Merz has drawn a firm line in the sand over Israel’s place in Europe’s most-watched cultural event. Speaking to Germany’s public broadcaster ARD on Sunday, Merz said he would support a full German withdrawal from the 2026 Eurovision Song Contest if Israel is excluded — calling the very idea of banning the Jewish state “a scandal.”
“I would support this,” Merz said. “I think it’s a scandal that this is even being discussed. Israel has a place there.”

Germany is one of Eurovision’s “Big Five” — the five major financial contributors to the contest alongside France, Italy, Spain, and the United Kingdom. While France has confirmed it will participate in next year’s contest, Spain has announced it would withdraw if Israel is not banned. Israel’s national broadcaster KAN responded with a warning: “We hope that the Eurovision Song Contest will continue to maintain its cultural and apolitical character. Excluding Israel could be a step with wide-ranging implications.”

The anti-Israel movement has found a home in Europe’s cultural elite, from academia to entertainment, fueled by years of globalist propaganda, left-wing activism, and media manipulation that reframes terrorism as “resistance” and self-defense as “genocide.”

Chancellor Merz’s stance may seem symbolic, but it reflects Germany’s complex historical responsibility and its growing political isolation within the EU for defending Israel. With Spain leading the anti-Israel bloc and France treading carefully, Berlin’s position could become a test of Europe’s moral backbone.
If Germany and other allies refuse to participate in a politicized Eurovision, it would send a powerful message — that cultural institutions must not become tools for ideological warfare.
