Comet Lemmon: A Rare Visitor
Discovered on January 3, 2025, by the 60-inch (1.5-meter) telescope at Mt. Lemmon, Arizona, Comet C/2025 A6 (Lemmon) is no ordinary comet. With more than 115 observation reports, scientists have traced its orbit and determined it swings into the inner solar system only once every 1,396 years. Its last visit occurred around the year 629 — and after 2025, it won’t return until 3421.

Currently positioned in the dawn sky in Gemini, Comet Lemmon has brightened rapidly, going from magnitude 16.5 to 11 in just a month. Japanese comet expert Seiichi Yoshida estimates that if this trend continues, the comet could reach magnitude 4 or 5 — visible to the naked eye from dark sites. Even if it only reaches magnitude 7.5, it will still be a spectacular sight through small telescopes.
