Facing mounting pressure and weakened by recent Israeli and American strikes, Iran is increasingly turning to its proxy militias to reassert its influence across the Middle East. Experts warn that Tehran is now more willing than ever to greenlight aggressive operations by its proxy networks, signaling a significant shift from the period before its 12-day war with Israel when nuclear negotiations with the United States were still underway.

Proxy Networks in Action: From Iraq to Yemen

Following a relentless campaign of airstrikes and covert operations targeting Iran’s military infrastructure and nuclear sites—including the U.S. strikes in June—Iran’s conventional military capabilities have been considerably degraded. In response, Tehran is revitalizing its extensive militia network, activating groups across Iraq, Syria, and the Houthi rebels in Yemen.

This reactivation serves as a strategic effort to regain lost ground and maintain its foothold in key regional theaters. The militias, which act as force multipliers, provide Iran with plausible deniability while projecting power and deterring adversaries.

A More Aggressive Proxy Policy

Previously, Iran exercised restraint over its proxies during nuclear talks with Washington, hoping to avoid actions that could derail diplomacy. However, with negotiations stalled and the shadow of renewed conflict looming large, experts note a noticeable change in Tehran’s approach.

“Iran is signaling that it will no longer tolerate attacks without retaliation and is empowering its proxies to act more freely,” said a regional security analyst. “The proxy militias have been given a green light to escalate, complicating the security landscape for Israel and its allies.”

Nuclear Talks on Hold, Threats on the Rise

Iran has publicly declared it will not return to nuclear negotiations as long as it remains under threat of further military strikes. This hardened stance raises concerns that Tehran may accelerate its nuclear program in tandem with proxy provocations, creating a dangerous dual-front challenge for regional stability.

Israel, in turn, has pledged to continue its campaign against Iranian entrenchment, both directly and through targeting proxies, aiming to disrupt Tehran’s efforts to rebuild its network of influence.
