Franklin Graham Calls for Nationwide Prayer Today

Franklin Graham, president and CEO of the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association (BGEA), has requested that churches across America pray for the nation today. Graham has reacted strongly to the death of George Floyd, a man who died in police custody, and the ensuing violent protests that have erupted nationwide.

He shared the following in a Facebook post:

A CALL TO PRAYER:

As Christians, the greatest weapon and the most powerful defense we have is prayer. Our country needs prayer in a critical way.

Tomorrow is Sunday, and I’m asking churches to have a special time of intercession for our nation in their Sunday morning services, whether in person or online. Will you pray, and will you share this with your pastor?

We need to pray for PEACE, because “the anger of man does not produce the righteousness of God” (James 1:20).
Pray for PERSPECTIVE, because “the wisdom from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, open to reason, full of mercy and good fruits, impartial and sincere” (James 3:17).

Pray for PATIENCE, because of God’s “kindness and forbearance and patience” toward us all (Romans 2:4).
And pray for an OUTPOURING of His wisdom and direction for our leaders and officials who are dealing with this crisis. Ask God to change hearts and heal this divide in our nation.

The BGEA has a dozen crisis-trained chaplains from the Billy Graham Rapid Response Team serving on the ground in Minneapolis, Minnesota, where Floyd died on Monday. They’ve witnessed local church leaders crying out to God for help.

The theme of the High Holy Days is teshuvah (הָ ובּשְּ ֹח ,(a Hebrew word often
translated as “repentance,” though more accurately understood as turning back
(shuv) to God. In spiritual terms, teshuvah may be regarded as a practical
turning away from evil and a turning toward the good, though it is simpler to
regard turning to God as the means by which we turn away from evil. Indeed,
the Greek word translated repentance (meta´noia) means going beyond our
habitual thinking, changing our mind, and learning to see from a radically
new perspective. As we look to God, we begin to see that “everything is
new” (2 Cor. 5:17).

Teshuvah (repentance) believes that the kindness of God can give life to our
dead hearts, and therefore it is first of all a matter of faith, trusting God to
perform the miracle for us. However, even though it is a great gift from Heaven,
repentance requires honesty and acknowledgment of the truth. We must confess
our inner poverty, our neediness, and mourn the loss and harm caused by our
sin (Matt. 5:1–12). Repentance turns away from attempts to defend or justify
ourselves and instead turns to God to heal our separation from Him (Rom. 8:3–4).

Teshuvah buries our old nature when we are made into a new creation.
Yeshua illustrated the heart behind teshuvah in the story of the “prodigal son”
(Luke 15:11–32). After squandering his inheritance from his father, the wayward
son returned home, full of shame and self-reproach. “But while he was still
a long way off, his father saw him and was filled with compassion for him; he
ran to his son, threw his arms around him and kissed him.” The father ordered
a celebratory meal in honor of his son’s homecoming. When the older brother
objected, the father said, “We had to celebrate and be glad, for your brother
was dead and is alive again, and was lost and is found.”

This parable reveals that teshuvah ultimately means returning to the compassionate
arms of your Heavenly Father. God sees you while you are still “a long way
off” (Rom. 5:8). He runs to you with affection when you begin to turn your heart
toward Him. Indeed, God’s compassion is so great that He willingly embraces
the shame of your sins and adorns you with “a fine robe, a ring, and sandals.”
Your Heavenly Father even slaughters the “fatted calf” (Yeshua) so that a meal celebrating your life may be served. Amen. Teshuvah is a gift from God and the very reason that we celebrate the High Holidays.

Yom Kippur and the Song of Moshe
It has been a long sermon for Pastor Moshe.  The thirty-one chapters of what we know as the Book of Deuteronomy all came forth during this sermon.  He has given the people a summation of the Torah and repeatedly told them the choice they have: to follow it or not. Whether they receive the blessings or the curses and the life or the death will result from their choices.
But how should a message like this end?  How about with a song?  It would not be just any song, but rather a song Moshe would compose, right there on the spot.  It was much more than just a song, much more than lyrics attached to a melody. The song would have the purpose of once again telling them and generations to come, the choice they have regarding following Torah, and the blessings and curses which would come from their decisions!
In this Song of Moshe, a song which is sung by those in the Book of Revelation, the summation is not of the Torah, but rather of the fall and redemption of mankind.  We see the love of a Dad to his children and the judgment of a Father when they get out of line.  We see the protection and nurturing on one hand and the deserved judgment on the other.  It is a song of the highs of obedience and the lows of correction.  It is a song which brings the assurance of victory in the end and confidence of eternal reward for those who remain faithful.  No wonder it is a song sung during the time of Revelation!
After the last note of the song rings out, reality sinks in.  Moshe is reminded of the walk he must soon take.  It is a walk he will make alone, the last walk that he will ever take in his lifetime.
I cannot imagine the emotions Moshe must have felt during this time.  He had failed to “demonstrate My holiness” to the people.  Striking the rock had, and would, cost him dearly.
With this very sobering image in our minds, let’s consider a question for ourselves.  How are we doing at “demonstrating His holiness” to the world around us?  How are we doing in this task with our spouse, our family, our co-workers or just any person we come in contact with on a daily basis?  After the closing song is sung, what image of The Father is being seen in our lives on a daily basis?
At this point I could continue about what it means to demonstrate His holiness, or how Moshe was apparently judged more harshly because of his failure, or any number of other avenues available, but I won’t.  I simply end this rather brief but direct Torah commentary with a short and direct question for each of us to answer privately to ourselves and also to Yah: “How am I doing at ‘demonstrating His holiness?'”
On a final note, it is interesting that this Torah portion falls in the days between Yom Teruah and Sukkot. The fall feasts prior to Sukkot are all about repentance and preparation, and I believe it is appropriate to get our hearts right before having the opportunity to “live out” our preparation by demonstrating His holiness at the gathering of Sukkot, all in practice of standing before Him on The Yom Kippur to come.

“Love Thy Neighbor”

Ki-Teitzei is traditionally considered during the month of Elul, as one is preparing his or her heart for the Fall high holidays. It is during this forty-day season of repentance or teshuvah, which lasts from 01 Elul through the Ten Days of Awe (01-09 Tishri) preceding Yom Kippur(10 Tishri), that many of our Jewish brethren turn, or in some cases return, to the God of Israel, and review their personal relationship with Him. For a Messianic community which studies the Torah portions on a weekly basis, this is a good example to follow. In some respects, this forty-day period is almost like an annual inspection of one’s soul to determine where a person stands in his or her relationship not only with the Almighty, but with one’s fellow human beings.

The Book of Deuteronomy is an important review of the Torah—and a great tool for instruction—as hearts are being prepared for not only the Day of Atonement, but also the season of joy that envelops the Feast of Tabernacles or Sukkot. While Believers in Yeshua do not necessarily approach the Fall high holidays in the same way as non-believing Jews, the fact remains that meditating upon God’s Word is of great personal benefit. The Psalms are replete with statements to this regard:

  • “But his delight is in the law of the LORD, and in His law he meditates day and night” (Psalm 1:2).
  • “I will meditate on Your precepts and regard Your ways” (Psalm 119:15).
  • “And I shall lift up my hands to Your commandments, which I love; and I will meditate on Your statutes” (Psalm 119:48).

Last week in Shoftim (Deuteronomy 16:18-21:9), the text dealt with the theme of justice in national civil matters, as instruction for judges, kings, priests, and prophets was described. This week, Ki-Teitzei deals primarily with matters that pertain to individuals, their families, and their neighbors on a more personal level.

As you read through these chapters of Deuteronomy in Ki-Teitzei (Deuteronomy 21:10-25:19), you are confronted with a wide array of instructions, including but not limited to: family laws,[1] laws of kindness,[2] laws about the holiness of the camp,[3] how to handle fugitive slaves,[4] laws prohibiting prostitution,[5] interest on money lent,[6] vows,[7]gleaning in neighbors’ fields,[8] divorce,[9] pledges,[10] treatment of workers,[11] individual responsibility,[12] avoiding injustice to the stranger,[13] instructions relating to orphans and widows,[14] judgments short of capital punishment,[15] kindness to animals,[16] the laws of levirate marriage (for a deceased brother),[17] flagrant immodesty,[18] honest weights and measures,[19] and finally remembering Amalek.[20]

This is a wide breadth of topics to consider. I would encourage you to take the time to read and consider these passages, because these commandments have helped to inform and guide many of the civil codes and social structures founded in the Judeo-Christian world. While there is a diversity of instructions witnessed in Ki-Teitzei, the overall theme we witness focuses on how one should handle affairs between people from all walks of life, namely, one’s family and neighbors. Where the emphasis appears on how to love God, these commandments give us a clearer understanding about how we are to love our neighbors.

It is no small feat to believe the message of Yeshua, and indeed, it involves a
passionate inwardness that “scandalizes” the rational mind. Our father Abraham
is extolled as the model of righteous faith, but he was tested to sacrifice the moral
law (e.g., “thou shalt not murder”) when he lifted up the knife to slay his beloved
son Isaac. Faith requires you to change your everyday thinking, to go beyond
natural expectations, to “walk on water.” In the case of Yeshua, we are confronted
with the “Absolute Paradox,” namely, the God-Man, the Infinite-made-Finite,
the Holy-made-Profane, the Sinless-made-Sin, who says to you: “I AM the
resurrection and the life. Whoever believes in Me, though he die, yet shall he
live, and everyone who lives and believes in Me shall never die. Do you believe
this?” (John 11:25–26). You will never die; you will never hunger; you are made
whole through My brokenness; you will be cleansed by My defilement, and so on.
It’s not just hard to believe, it’s impossible, which is why it is a miracle of God to be saved (Matt. 19:26). “It is the Spirit that gives life; the flesh is no help at all” (John 6:63). The difference is Yeshua: Salvation is of the Lord. We are enabled to love and know God by means of His inner life and spirit, not by means of good intentions or religious zeal. Sounding the Shofar, a Call to Repentance

JERUSALEM, Israel – Israel is celebrating the fall feasts, a special season of biblical holidays. These annual holy days begin with Rosh Hashanah, the Jewish New Year, and include Yom Kippur, the Day of Atonement.

But there’s more to this season and the Bible points the way.

Rosh Hashanah literally means “the head of the year,” the New Year, but biblically it’s much more than that.

In the Book of Leviticus, it’s called Yom Hateruah, the day of the blowing of trumpets or ram’s horns – the Judgment Day.

“The only mitzvah, the only commandment during Rosh HaShanah, is actually to hear the sound of the shofar. And so everybody [is] gathering in the synagogue to hear the sound of the shofar,” Eli Ribak, co-owner of Ribak and Barsheshet Shofarot Israel  told CBN News. “It’s something that people connect to their soul to hear the sound of the shofar.” (Click to Article)

How Can America Turn Back To God?

What can we do to help bring this country back to God? Take a look in 2 Chronicles 20 and see what happens when a nation turns back to God.

It happened after this that the people of Moab with the people of Ammon, and others with them besides the Ammonites, came to battle against Jehoshaphat. Then some came and told Jehoshaphat, saying, “A great multitude is coming against you from beyond the sea, from Syria; and they are in Hazazon Tamar” (which is En Gedi).  And Jehoshaphat feared, and set himself to seek the Lord, and proclaimed a fast throughout all Judah.  So Judah gathered together to ask help from the Lord; and from all the cities of Judah they came to seek the Lord.

Then Jehoshaphat stood in the assembly of Judah and Jerusalem, in the house of the Lord, before the new court, and said: “O Lord God of our fathers, are You not God in heaven, and do You not rule over all the kingdoms of the nations, and in Your hand is there not power and might, so that no one is able to withstand You?  Are You not our God, who drove out the inhabitants of this land before Your people Israel, and gave it to the descendants of Abraham Your friend forever?  And they dwell in it, and have built You a sanctuary in it for Your name, saying,  ‘If disaster comes upon us—sword, judgment, pestilence, or famine—we will stand before this temple and in Your presence (for Your name is in this temple), and cry out to You in our affliction, and You will hear and save.’  And now, here are the people of Ammon, Moab, and Mount Seir—whom You would not let Israel invade when they came out of the land of Egypt, but they turned from them and did not destroy them— here they are, rewarding us by coming to throw us out of Your possession which You have given us to inherit.  O our God, will You not judge them? For we have no power against this great multitude that is coming against us; nor do we know what to do, but our eyes are upon You.”

 Now all Judah, with their little ones, their wives, and their children, stood before the Lord.

Then the Spirit of the Lord came upon Jahaziel the son of Zechariah, the son of Benaiah, the son of Jeiel, the son of Mattaniah, a Levite of the sons of Asaph, in the midst of the assembly.  And he said, “Listen, all you of Judah and you inhabitants of Jerusalem, and you, King Jehoshaphat! Thus says the Lord to you: ‘Do not be afraid nor dismayed because of this great multitude, for the battle is not yours, but God’s.  Tomorrow go down against them. They will surely come up by the Ascent of Ziz, and you will find them at the end of the brook before the Wilderness of Jeruel. You will not need to fight in this battle. Position yourselves, stand still and see the salvation of the Lord, who is with you, O Judah and Jerusalem!’ Do not fear or be dismayed; tomorrow go out against them, for the Lord is with you.”

 And Jehoshaphat bowed his head with his face to the ground, and all Judah and the inhabitants of Jerusalem bowed before the Lord, worshiping the Lord. Then the Levites of the children of the Kohathites and of the children of the Korahites stood up to praise the Lord God of Israel with voices loud and high.

 So they rose early in the morning and went out into the Wilderness of Tekoa; and as they went out, Jehoshaphat stood and said, “Hear me, O Judah and you inhabitants of Jerusalem: Believe in the Lord your God, and you shall be established; believe His prophets, and you shall prosper.”  And when he had consulted with the people, he appointed those who should sing to the Lord, and who should praise the beauty of holiness, as they went out before the army and were saying:

“Praise the Lord,
For His mercy endures forever.”

 Now when they began to sing and to praise, the Lord set ambushes against the people of Ammon, Moab, and Mount Seir, who had come against Judah; and they were defeated.  For the people of Ammon and Moab stood up against the inhabitants of Mount Seir to utterly kill and destroy them. And when they had made an end of the inhabitants of Seir, they helped to destroy one another.

So when Judah came to a place overlooking the wilderness, they looked toward the multitude; and there were their dead bodies, fallen on the earth. No one had escaped.

 When Jehoshaphat and his people came to take away their spoil, they found among them an abundance of valuables on the dead bodies, and precious jewelry, which they stripped off for themselves, more than they could carry away; and they were three days gathering the spoil because there was so much.  And on the fourth day they assembled in the Valley of Berachah, for there they blessed the Lord; therefore the name of that place was called The Valley of Berachah  until this day.  Then they returned, every man of Judah and Jerusalem, with Jehoshaphat in front of them, to go back to Jerusalem with joy, for the Lord had made them rejoice over their enemies.  So they came to Jerusalem, with stringed instruments and harps and trumpets, to the house of the Lord.   And the fear of God was on all the kingdoms of those countries when they heard that the Lord had fought against the enemies of Israel.   Then the realm of Jehoshaphat was quiet, for his God gave him rest all around.

We should look at how Uganda repented of their sins and see the many more blessings America would receive, if we turned back to God.

UGANDAN PRESIDENT REPENTS OF PERSONAL, NATIONAL SINS

‘We confess idolatry, witchcraft, political hypocrisy, dishonesty, intrigue’

Should a president lead citizens in a national prayer of repentance?

Uganda’s Christian president believes so.

The Ugandan newssite New Vision reports President Yoweri Museveni celebrated Uganda’s 50th anniversary of independence from Britain at the National Jubilee Prayers event by publicly repenting of his personal sin and the sins of the nation.

“I stand here today to close the evil past, and especially in the last 50 years of our national leadership history and at the threshold of a new dispensation in the life of this nation. I stand here on my own behalf and on behalf of my predecessors to repent. We ask for your forgiveness,” Museveni prayed.

“We confess these sins, which have greatly hampered our national cohesion and delayed our political, social and economic transformation. We confess sins of idolatry and witchcraft which are rampant in our land. We confess sins of shedding innocent blood, sins of political hypocrisy, dishonesty, intrigue and betrayal,” Museveni said.

“Forgive us of sins of pride, tribalism and sectarianism; sins of laziness, indifference and irresponsibility; sins of corruption and bribery that have eroded our national resources; sins of sexual immorality, drunkenness and debauchery; sins of unforgiveness, bitterness, hatred and revenge; sins of injustice, oppression and exploitation; sins of rebellion, insubordination, strife and conflict,” Museveni prayed.

Next, the president dedicated Uganda to God.

“We want to dedicate this nation to you so that you will be our God and guide. We want Uganda to be known as a nation that fears God and as a nation whose foundations are firmly rooted in righteousness and justice to fulfill what the Bible says in Psalm 33:12: Blessed is the nation whose God is the Lord. A people you have chosen as your own,” Museveni prayed.

Uganda won its independence from Britain Oct. 8, 1962. Resistance leader Milton Obote was the country’s first prime minister.

Massachusetts pastor and activist Rev. Scott Lively believes Museveni is a model for other national leaders.

“The Museveni prayer is a model for all Christian leaders in the world. The leaders of the West have declined in proportion to their degree of rejection of God,” Lively said.

Lively also believes Uganda will rise as a major African power as America continues to decline. He uses Britain as an example.

“Britain was at its height as a world power when it honored God as the Ugandan president has just done. America’s greatness has similarly diminished as we have shifted from a Christian to a secular-humanist country. But watch now for Uganda to be blessed by God for their desire to be His,” Lively said.

Lively added that Museveni is definitely drawing a contrast between Uganda and the West.

“This incident is also important as a contrast to the picture being painted of Uganda by the godless left of a backwards, violent and savage culture intent on murdering homosexuals,” Lively said.

“On the contrary, Museveni is calmly and confidently setting the course of his nation by the guidance of the Bible, in a way that also shows great courage and resolve,” Lively said.

Homosexual activist groups have criticized the government of Uganda and Museveni for passing laws criminalizing homosexual behavior. A current bill before the Ugandan Parliament increases the jail sentences for homosexual acts and includes criminal penalties for those who encourage or promote homosexuality.

The bill had included the death penalty for those who commit multiple acts of homosexual behavior, but the provision has been removed, BBC News reports.

The government of Uganda could not be reached for comment on this story.

Lively said he didn’t agree with the death penalty provision but supports the nation’s strong stance against homosexual behavior.

While Museveni is being held as a model for Christian leaders, Dave Daubenmire, PT Salt Ministries’ president and founder and social commentator, said the problem for Western nations goes deeper than the political leaders.

The problem in the United States, he said, is the pastors.

“Sadly, I think our lack of repentance is the fault of the pulpit. Individual Christians are so awash in sin that they think politicians are merely better at sin than they are,” Daubenmire said.

“There is no fear of the Lord and we are getting essentially a two-kingdom message. We hear that the devil is the god of this world and that Jesus will even the score later,” Daubenmire said. “The problem is that most Christians are convinced that this world is in control of Satan and therefore are not interested in applying the kingdom principles for which Christ died.”

Daubenmire quoted Matthew 28:18, in which Jesus said, “All power is given unto me in heaven and in earth.”

Christians, Daubenmire said, are exhorted later in the same chapter to go and make disciples of all nations.

“We are to teach them and baptize them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit,” he said. “All power in heaven and in earth belongs to Jesus. Unfortunately, most Christians don’t have the foggiest idea that He rules and reigns here and now, and that the kingdom principles that He taught us bring victory over evil wherever they are applied.”

He added that Christians too often play with sin.

“Since we do not hate sin anymore, we don’t demand repentance,” Daubenmire said.

He quoted British 17th century statesman Edmund Burke, who said, “The only thing necessary for evil to triumph is for good men to do nothing.”

Daubenmire said that in America, “good men have yielded power to evil men.”

“Evil rules when evil men make the rules,” he said.

America Must Repent Of Her Sins Or Suffer The Consequences

“When I shut up the heavens so that there is no rain, or command locusts to devour the land or send a plague among my people,  if my people, who are called by my name, will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, and I will forgive their sin and will heal their land.”

2 Chronicles 7 : 13-14

 

How can the United States turn itself around from the curses that it has brought upon itself with it’s terrible treatment of Israel?

  • Acknowledge the One True God of the Bible who has a Name, YAHWEH /JEHOVAH, who sen His Son, Jesus, to die on the cross and bear all of mankind’s sins to redeem, cleanse and save us from our iniquities which separate us from God and leads to death.
  • Starting from our government leaders down to the common man, we must identify, confess and ask God for the forgiveness of all our sins we’ve committed against Him.  If we ever expect this country to receive the blessings of God, we need to do this immediately in order to be right with Him.
  • We must stop promoting and doing what is wrong, according to the Word of God;  it is rebellion and sin against Him.  These are the sins that we,  in this country, are promoting:  Worshiping other gods, lying, stealing, murder of all lives including infantcide (abortion), same sex marriage, homosexuality and promoting hatred against Israel and the Jewish people.
  • Concerning Israel and the Jewish people, we must defend them because God is not done with saving His chosen people.  All Israel will be saved, as His Word declares (see below).

 “For I do not desire, brethren, that you should be ignorant of this mystery, lest you should be wise in your own opinion, that blindness in part has happened to Israel until the fullness of the Gentiles has come in.  And so all Israel will be saved, as it is written:

The Deliverer will come out of Zion,
And He will turn away ungodliness from Jacob;
 For this is My covenant with them,
When I take away their sins.”

 Concerning the gospel they are enemies for your sake, but concerning the election they are beloved for the sake of the fathers.  For the gifts and the calling of God are irrevocable.  For as you were once disobedient to God, yet have now obtained mercy through their disobedience,  even so these also have now been disobedient, that through the mercy shown you they also may obtain mercy.  For God has committed them all to disobedience, that He might have mercy on all.

The decision is now left for us.  Do we want to continue in our sinful ways and continue in the curses or do we want to be right with God and receive the blessings while still supporting Israel?

And when they had set them in the midst, they asked, “By what power or by what name have you done this?”

Then Peter, filled with the Holy Spirit, said to them, “Rulers of the people and elders of Israel: If we this day are judged for a good deed done to a helpless man, by what means he has been made well,  let it be known to you all, and to all the people of Israel, that by the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, whom you crucified, whom God raised from the dead, by Him this man stands here before you whole.  This is the ‘stone which was rejected by you builders, which has become the chief cornerstone.  Nor is there salvation in any other, for there is no other name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved.”

DELIVERANCE FROM SODOM

Most of us think of Sodom as a type of modern-day wicked city such as San
Francisco, New York or New Orleans. But the truth is, we need only to look at
our own hearts to find Sodom. We are all born with a Sodomite nature—a heart
that is exceedingly wicked, full of every evil thing. “Yea, in your heart ye
work wickedness; ye weigh the violence of your hands in the earth” (Psalm
58:2)

I believe the following passage reveals how God delivers us out of Sodom:

“According as his divine power hath given unto us all things that pertain unto
life and godliness, through the knowledge of him that hath called us to glory
and virtue: whereby are given unto us exceeding great and precious promises:
that by these ye might be partakers of the divine nature, having escaped the
corruption that is in the world through lust” (2 Peter 1:3-4).

God comes to us in our deluded, bound condition with powerful promises of full
and complete deliverance. He says, “I pledge to deliver you and keep you from
iniquity. I will give you a heart to obey Me, so now let My promises lay hold
of you.”

What a wonderful, freeing truth. We are led out of our sin as we lay hold of
God’s promises. Think about it for a moment. Peter says the believers he was
addressing in this epistle had “escaped the corruption that is in the world
through lust” (verse 4). How did these Christians escape sin? They were given
divine power—life and godliness—through their faith in God’s promises.

Beloved, your Father wants you to know fullness of joy in Christ. That joy will
break out only as you are freed from the power of sin. So, allow the Holy Spirit
to go into the womb of your lusts and remove everything that is unlike Christ.
Pray to the Lord right now:

“Oh, Father, I agree with You about my sin. The stench of my compromise has
reached into heaven and I know it has to go immediately. Lord, I receive Your
loving, divine ultimatum and I lay everything down before You. Set fire to
everything wicked in me and let Your promises take hold of my heart. Lead me to
the mountain of Your holiness.”
