Why followers of Jesus shouldn’t smoke pot: former addict

June 24, 2019 (LifeSiteNews) — I want to share my own convictions as to why followers of Jesus should not smoke pot. I encourage you to consider them prayerfully before the Lord.

First, for the sake of clarity and simplicity, I’m not addressing the issue of the medical use of marijuana, as prescribed by a responsible doctor. While it’s possible these subjects are related, I’m focusing here on the recreational use of marijuana.

Second, I speak from personal experience, both as a follower of Jesus and as a former pot smoker.

In short, I was a heavy drug user from 1969 to 1971, earning the nicknames “Drug Bear” and “Iron Man” in the process. The drugs I used included pot, hash, ups, downs, LSD, mescaline, speed, heroin, and (very briefly, right before I got saved) cocaine.

Many of my friends, colleagues, and former ministry school students were drug users, too, some heavily and some lightly. But we hold the same views today about Christians smoking (or ingesting) pot.

In short, you cannot “be sober and alert” and smoke pot at the same time. Yet God’s Word calls us to the former.

Peter wrote, “Be alert and of sober mind. Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour” (1 Peter 5:8, NIV).

When you smoke pot, even a little, your mind gets into a more relaxed state, a state of lowered alertness and lower sobriety. It’s called “getting high” for a reason.

You might think it enhances your thinking or creativity or spirituality, but in reality, it is bringing you into a less sober state of mind, one in which your ability to respond rapidly and critically is actually lessened. So, you might be more “creative,” but not in a holy and godly way.

Yet a recent headline on Christian Post announced, “XXXchurch Pastor Craig Gross promotes ‘Christian Cannabis,’ says weed makes it easier to worship.”

The pastor, Craig Gross, explained, “I’ve never lifted my hands in a worship service ever, ’cause I was raised Baptist. … I’ve done that in my bathroom worshiping with marijuana by myself.”

Ironically, it’s for this same reason that some strippers get high before performing or some actors have a few drinks before engaging in a sex scene. The drugs or drink loosen them up and relax them, helping to remove their inhibitions.

But this is the opposite of spiritual liberty. It has nothing to do with holiness, and it is totally unrelated to worship. (The real shame here is that Pastor Gross has fought against the use of porn for many years. Yet Christians who get high will find their ability to resist sexual sin lessened as well.)

Before I knew Jesus, I received incredible spiritual “revelations” while tripping on LSD or mescaline, especially when combined with huffing diesel gas. I even discovered the secret of the universe!

All of this was from below, not from above. All of this was deception.

We should also factor in that pot remains a gateway drug, opening the door to more serious drug abuse over time. Is it any surprise that Denver has now voted to decriminalize psychedelic mushrooms after Colorado legalized cannabis in 2014?

Even if you never went beyond pot after years of personal use, the moment you advocate it, you open the door to others. Is that wise?

I’ve also been told repeatedly that pot today is not like the pot I once smoked. It’s much more potent and dangerous. And the very real, not exaggerated, dangers of marijuana use have been documented by Alex Berenson in his bestselling book Tell Your Children: The Truth About Marijuana, Mental Illness, and Violence.

As the blurb states, this “eye-opening report from an award-winning author and former New York Times reporter reveals the link between teenage marijuana use and mental illness, and a hidden epidemic of violence caused by the drug — facts the media have ignored as the United States rushes to legalize cannabis.”

Bad roots will produce bad fruit. Just give things enough time.

According to a report from SF Gate, “With some marijuana products averaging 68 percent THC — exponentially greater than the pot baby boomers once smoked — calls to poison control centers and visits to emergency rooms have risen. In the Denver area, visits to Children’s Hospital Colorado facilities for treatment of cyclic vomiting, paranoia, psychosis and other acute cannabis-related symptoms jumped to 777 in 2015, from 161 in 2005.”

Significantly, “The increase was most notable in the years following legalization of medical sales in 2009 and retail use in 2014, according to a study in the Journal of Adolescent Health published in 2018.”

In the words of psychiatrist Libby Stuyt, who treats teens in southwestern Colorado and has studied the health impacts of high-potency marijuana, “Horrible things are happening to kids. I see increased problems with psychosis, with addiction, with suicide, with depression and anxiety.”

And while the effects on adults might not always be as extreme (or, as quickly noticed), it is clear that anything this harmful to teens can hardly be beneficial to adults.

Paul exhorted the believers in Ephesus, “And do not get drunk with wine, for that is debauchery, but be filled with the Spirit” (Ephesians 5:18, ESV).

In the same way, he would urge us not to get high on drugs, but rather to be filled with the Spirit.

Of course, I’m quite aware that the response of many would be, “But that’s the whole point. Just as we can drink alcohol in moderation, we can smoke pot in moderation.”

My response would be 1) it’s an unnecessary crutch; 2) it still removes your full sobriety; 3) it opens the door to more intense pot use, along with the use of other drugs; 4) it creates another fleshly habit in your life.

For two years, day and night, my life centered on drugs and rock music, and I got as high as humanly possible without dying, once taking enough hallucinogenic drugs for 30 people. (I am only alive and in God’s service by His grace and mercy!) And in the months before coming to faith in Jesus, I smoked pot morning, noon, and night. It became a constant part of my life.

Yet when I truly experienced the joy of the Lord, which then revealed the depths of His love to me, I said to Him on the spot, “I will never put a needle in my arm again!” And I was free from that day (December 17, 1971) until today.

Two days after that, while smoking hash with friends, I realized that the Lord didn’t want me to get high in any way. And the rest is history.

So, before you get high (whether for the first time or again), ask yourself these questions: Is this light or darkness? Is this feeding my spirit or my flesh? Is this exalting Jesus or opening the door to the enemy?

Be wise, and sober, my friend. And be filled with the Holy Spirit. There is nothing like it. (Click to Source)

Are You Confused About Prayer?

David Wilkerson (1931-2011)April 5, 2019

“The Spirit also helps in our weaknesses. For we do not know what we should pray for as we ought, but the Spirit Himself makes intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered” (Romans 8:26). The Holy Spirit has come to lead us into a life of prayer.

We can get so confused about prayer, making it seem so complicated. There are multitudes of theories that bring confusion and raise all kinds of questions: “When does prayer become intercession? Is intercession measured by fervency, or loudness, or the amount of time spent on my knees? How will I know I am praying in God’s will? Do mental prayers count? What, exactly, do I pray for?”

Such confusion can be overwhelming and might actually keep people from praying. Yet there has never been a time when the prayers of God’s people were more needed. Even in his ancient time, Paul said of the earth, “The whole creation groans” (Romans 8:22). Reports of devastation and impending doom come at us from all sides and such reports are overwhelming people worldwide. Christians are not exempt from the stress of what is happening in our world.

As global events worsen, conspiring to rob people of peace, societies everywhere are looking for a source of comfort. But they are not finding it in psychotherapy, in dead religion, in causes, even in charity. Our only resource for such a time is the prayer of faith.

Here are just a few powerful ways the Holy Spirit plays a role in our prayers:

  • It is in prayer that the Holy Spirit manifests the presence of Christ in us.
  • It is in prayer that the Spirit seals God’s promises in our hearts.
  • It is in prayer that the Comforter speaks hope to us.
  • It is in prayer that the Spirit releases his rivers of comfort, peace and rest in our souls.

Pray this prayer: “Holy Spirit, keep me in close communion with Jesus. Do not let me neglect my time alone with the One my soul loves. Keep me on my knees, then I will know your comfort.” (Click to Source)

Deliverance and Liberation Prayer: Spirit of Pharmakeia (Prescription Drugs)

by Dr. William & Mary Schnoebelen

With One Accord Ministries © 2018 (We advise praying this prayer after seeking Abba Father for His Wisdom. Consult with your Health Care Professional concerning any prescription drugs you currently take and the effects of stopping or changing your medication. If, after this consultation, you do not feel comfortable with changing your medications, pray the second prayer (Prayer II) below. Either way, it will be a great help!)

  • Abba YAHWEH, in Yeshua’s mighty Name, I humbly ask Your forgiveness for relying primarily upon pharmaceutical drugs instead of faith in You and the healing power of Your Son, Yeshua the Messiah.
  • I ask Your forgiveness for being overly dependent on these poisonous chemicals!
  • Please Abba, give me wisdom from Your RUACH (Holy Spirit) about using these chemicals and give me the understanding and courage to speak to my physician about alternatives or diet-based solutions.
  • Blessed YAHWEH in Yeshua’s Name, I formally renounce before Your Throne the drugs [name them]and all associated spirits, signatures, proclamations, prognoses and diagnoses behind them and made over me or by me, in any form.
  • I declare they have no more power over me, and that I am bought and paid for by the Blood of the Lamb, shed on the cross of Calvary.
  • I proclaim this in faith by the power of the Cross, the Blood and the name of Yeshua!
  • In Yeshua’s Mighty Name Abba, I ask You to expose any and all enemies of Yeshua seeking to defeat, disable or destroy me and the redemptive Purposes that You have for my life.
  • I renounce and come against the spirit of Pharmakeia, the spirit of bondage and the spirit of infirmity [add any other strongmen as you feel led by the RUACH/HOLY SPIRIT] – I sever you from the satan and any power above you.
  • I remove your right to afflict me and I say YAHWEH rebuke thee!
  • I bind you all together as one and weaken you with the Blood of Calvary. I command you to leave me right now and GO where Yeshua the Messiah tells you to go by the voice of His Set Apart Spirit.
  • I also pray Father and ask You to break the power of any curses off me or my family or loved ones which I may have incurred through use of these chemical drugs.
  • Father, in Yeshua’s mighty Name, I formally ask you to shut any doorways opened into our lives because of these spirits and ask You to seal those doorways shut forever with the Blood of the Lamb, shed on the cross of Calvary!
  • Abba YAHWEH, in Yeshua’s mighty name, I also ask You to flood me with the Spirit of Abundant Life, and fill me with vibrant and invincible health according to Your best and perfect will for my life.
  • Teach me to follow Your Ways and bless me with deeper Understanding, Wisdom and Faith than ever before,
  • Fill me with Your Spirit of Power and of Love and of a Sound Mind.

In Yeshua’s Mighty name, Amen

Franklin Graham: ‘The Lord Saved Us From A Godless, Atheistic Agenda’

11667467_953395104716671_8506768854039924001_n

Franklin Graham has been urging the country to pray for the election ever since the campaigns began. He even toured 50 states, gathering thousands to pray on the steps of capitol buildings. Now, he insists that the hand of God has intervened to bring about the result. “Hundreds of thousands of Christians from across the United States have been praying. This year they came out to every state capitol to pray for this election and for the future of America. Prayer groups were started. Families prayed. Churches prayed. Then Christians went to the polls, and God showed up,” Graham writes.

“While the media scratches their heads and tries to understand how this happened, I believe that God’s hand intervened Tuesday night to stop the godless, atheistic progressive agenda from taking control of our country,” he continues.

“President-elect Donald J. Trump and Vice President-elect Mike Pence are going to need a lot of help and they will continue to need a lot of prayer. I pray that President-elect Trump will surround himself with godly men and women to help advise and counsel him as he leads the nation.”

“My prayer is that God will bless America again!”

THE PAYDAY – David Wilkerson Today

THE PAYDAY
by David Wilkerson
[May 19, 1931 – April 27, 2011]
Jesus-Door-Knock-
I want to give you four tragic results that befall those who dethrone the Lord.

1.  “Israel is an empty vine, he bringeth forth fruit unto himself”
(Hosea 10:1).

Everyone in Israel was looking out for himself and the result was total
emptiness. Hosea was speaking to believers, showing them a picture of what
happens to all who dethrone the Lord in their lives. Such people become selfish
and miserable and their every pursuit ends in emptiness.

2.  “Their heart is divided . . . he shall break down their altars, he
shall spoil their images” (verse 2).

Our nation’s heart is divided. Americans pay lip service to God and religion,
but they do not worship the Lord in truth. That has led directly to the
breakdown of all our hallowed institutions. When you lose faith in God and
place your trust in something else, that thing becomes an idol. This is
happening in our nation today. Our society no longer trusts God, turning
instead to the government, the President, the educational system, Social
Security—all to try to find some kind of stability. God is saying, “If you
won’t trust Me, I’ll make all your trusted institutions fail.”

3.  “Ye have plowed wickedness, ye have reaped iniquity . . . because
thou didst trust in thy way, in the multitude of thy mighty men” (verse 13).

Hosea is saying, “You stopped trusting in the Lord and now you’re going to reap
a harvest of iniquity!” Humankind today is sophisticated, educated,
knowledgeable. We have dethroned God—rejecting the Bible and prayer—and
enthroned science, psychology and education. Yet, I ask you: What has been the
harvest? What has all our sophisticated learning brought us?

4.  “We have no king, because we feared not the Lord” (verse 3).

Hosea was a prophet over Israel, but when Israel’s backsliding began, he was
powerless to stop the loss of faith. His words carried no authority. Whenever
he spoke, the people merely shook their heads and said, “We have no leadership,
no direction. We’re drifting.”
That is just what is happening in America right now and the same thing is
happening in the church today. Many Christians mock their pastors, ridiculing
their authority. Why? Because these men’s words carry no power. People are
saying, “We no longer have any leadership in our church. We’re lost, confused.”
That is the payday for dethroning the Lord!

Today’s Prayer – January 1, 2013

Dear Father in Heaven,

prayer1

You know how hard it is to see your children and families hurting when they do not communicate with you and one another, when they are self-centered, out of your will, and following the wrong paths. Maybe they get too busy to nourish the really important relationships in their lives. I pray right now for my own family, for all of the families around the world, for husbands and wives who have grown apart or are on the verge of divorce, for children who are rebellious and angry, for parents who are too busy and irritated, for those who are bitter or hurt. God please reach down and tug on their hearts, speak to their minds, and show them the way. I pray that the root of their problems will be exposed and that through the Holy Spirit, through Your Word, through a caring friend or a concerned Christian, or whatever way you know is best, that you will turn around those lives that are headed the wrong direction and put them back together. I pray that these families will become healthy, happy, God-honoring, communicating and loving families. And God, for the families that are doing well, I pray that you would protect them from the evil one; surround them with guardian angels; and keep that family under your wings of love and guidance. Thank you, in Jesus’ name,

Amen.

Today’s Prayer – December 29, 2012

JesusPrayingForUs

Oh Dear Lord, Thank you for your promises! Thank you for opening your arms and welcoming me to come to you, to find rest in you, to find freedom in you, to have abundant life in you. I cry out to you now for those who are heavy on my heart, for those who are going through the fire and those who are going through the valleys; for those who face difficulties and those who have come through trials and are triumphant because of you. I pray for your grace and mercy, your peace and love, your hand upon their lives. I pray for miracles and ministries. I pray that all who are weary will cry out to you and trust you. And I thank you so much for all that you have done and all that you will do. May your works and miracles in our lives be witness to the world that you are God. May you be glorified and souls be saved. In the name of Jesus I pray,

Amen.

Today’s Prayer

repentance-prayer1

Dear God, today I come to you and ask for a special touch upon the leaders of the nations and upon those who must make decisions that affect the world economic and financial conditions. Please provide wisdom and clarity of mind. May politics be put aside and the right decisions made. And in the United States, may the best interests of our country and our people as a whole be at the center of every decision. May your will be done. Please have mercy upon us. We trust in you to protect us and to meet our every need. Thank you, God, for working your plan for us and for giving us peace in the midst of unrest. In the name of Jesus I pray, Amen.

How Can America Turn Back To God?

What can we do to help bring this country back to God? Take a look in 2 Chronicles 20 and see what happens when a nation turns back to God.

It happened after this that the people of Moab with the people of Ammon, and others with them besides the Ammonites, came to battle against Jehoshaphat. Then some came and told Jehoshaphat, saying, “A great multitude is coming against you from beyond the sea, from Syria; and they are in Hazazon Tamar” (which is En Gedi).  And Jehoshaphat feared, and set himself to seek the Lord, and proclaimed a fast throughout all Judah.  So Judah gathered together to ask help from the Lord; and from all the cities of Judah they came to seek the Lord.

Then Jehoshaphat stood in the assembly of Judah and Jerusalem, in the house of the Lord, before the new court, and said: “O Lord God of our fathers, are You not God in heaven, and do You not rule over all the kingdoms of the nations, and in Your hand is there not power and might, so that no one is able to withstand You?  Are You not our God, who drove out the inhabitants of this land before Your people Israel, and gave it to the descendants of Abraham Your friend forever?  And they dwell in it, and have built You a sanctuary in it for Your name, saying,  ‘If disaster comes upon us—sword, judgment, pestilence, or famine—we will stand before this temple and in Your presence (for Your name is in this temple), and cry out to You in our affliction, and You will hear and save.’  And now, here are the people of Ammon, Moab, and Mount Seir—whom You would not let Israel invade when they came out of the land of Egypt, but they turned from them and did not destroy them— here they are, rewarding us by coming to throw us out of Your possession which You have given us to inherit.  O our God, will You not judge them? For we have no power against this great multitude that is coming against us; nor do we know what to do, but our eyes are upon You.”

Now all Judah, with their little ones, their wives, and their children, stood before the Lord.

Then the Spirit of the Lord came upon Jahaziel the son of Zechariah, the son of Benaiah, the son of Jeiel, the son of Mattaniah, a Levite of the sons of Asaph, in the midst of the assembly.  And he said, “Listen, all you of Judah and you inhabitants of Jerusalem, and you, King Jehoshaphat! Thus says the Lord to you: ‘Do not be afraid nor dismayed because of this great multitude, for the battle is not yours, but God’s.  Tomorrow go down against them. They will surely come up by the Ascent of Ziz, and you will find them at the end of the brook before the Wilderness of Jeruel. You will not need to fight in this battle. Position yourselves, stand still and see the salvation of the Lord, who is with you, O Judah and Jerusalem!’ Do not fear or be dismayed; tomorrow go out against them, for the Lord is with you.”

And Jehoshaphat bowed his head with his face to the ground, and all Judah and the inhabitants of Jerusalem bowed before the Lord, worshiping the Lord. Then the Levites of the children of the Kohathites and of the children of the Korahites stood up to praise the Lord God of Israel with voices loud and high.

So they rose early in the morning and went out into the Wilderness of Tekoa; and as they went out, Jehoshaphat stood and said, “Hear me, O Judah and you inhabitants of Jerusalem: Believe in the Lord your God, and you shall be established; believe His prophets, and you shall prosper.”  And when he had consulted with the people, he appointed those who should sing to the Lord, and who should praise the beauty of holiness, as they went out before the army and were saying:

“Praise the Lord,
For His mercy endures forever.”

Now when they began to sing and to praise, the Lord set ambushes against the people of Ammon, Moab, and Mount Seir, who had come against Judah; and they were defeated.  For the people of Ammon and Moab stood up against the inhabitants of Mount Seir to utterly kill and destroy them. And when they had made an end of the inhabitants of Seir, they helped to destroy one another.

So when Judah came to a place overlooking the wilderness, they looked toward the multitude; and there were their dead bodies, fallen on the earth. No one had escaped.

When Jehoshaphat and his people came to take away their spoil, they found among them an abundance of valuables on the dead bodies, and precious jewelry, which they stripped off for themselves, more than they could carry away; and they were three days gathering the spoil because there was so much.  And on the fourth day they assembled in the Valley of Berachah, for there they blessed the Lord; therefore the name of that place was called The Valley of Berachah  until this day.  Then they returned, every man of Judah and Jerusalem, with Jehoshaphat in front of them, to go back to Jerusalem with joy, for the Lord had made them rejoice over their enemies.  So they came to Jerusalem, with stringed instruments and harps and trumpets, to the house of the Lord.   And the fear of God was on all the kingdoms of those countries when they heard that the Lord had fought against the enemies of Israel.   Then the realm of Jehoshaphat was quiet, for his God gave him rest all around.
