Solar Eclipse – A Sign And A Wonder

It seems a truly remarkable “coincidence” that despite the sun being 400 times larger than the moon, they appear to be EXACTLY the same size from this planet – but only from this planet, rather interestingly. Almost as if it was designed that way, as a phenomenon to be seen and enjoyed from earth. And that is because it wasdesigned. It was designed by God for our benefit, not only for our sense of wonderment, but also as a sign. A clue about this is found in some words – and a single Hebrew letter – appearing in Genesis 1.

A solar eclipse is like a giant wink from our heavenly Father, letting us know that the universe did not come about by accident, but by perfect design.

A sign and a wonder

The diameter of the sun (1.3914 million km) is approximately 400 times bigger than that of the moon (3,474 km), but it is also 400 times farther away from us (384,400 km compared to 149.6 million km). So, when they are in the same place in the sky, the moon will perfectly cover the circumference of the sun, giving a perfect eclipse.

Total solar eclipses are one of the most awe-inspiring phenomena there is to see – the moon hides the sun, but rays from the sun peek out from around the black disc, forming the “solar corona”, or a crown of light and casting eerie shadows and plunging us into a few seconds of darkness before the colossal globes carry onwards in their courses.

Umbraphile (fan of eclipses) David Baron explains why he travels across the world to catch every eclipse he can in a TED talk on the subject. He is not a spiritual man, but admits that his first experience of a total solar eclipse changed him forever. He said,

“It is the ultimate experience of awe… True awe is a sense of wonder and insignificance in the face of something enormous and grand is rare in our lives but when you experience it, it’s powerful. Awe dissolves the ego, it us feel connected, indeed, it promotes empathy and generosity. Well, there’s nothing more awesome than a total solar eclipse.”

Of course, there is something more awesome than a total solar eclipse, and that’s the One who created the entire universe and all its intricacies by the power of his word! And he is calling for our attention in a powerful way.

The sign in Genesis 1

Then God said, “Let lights in the expanse of the sky be for separating the day from the night. They will be for signs and for seasons and for days and years. They will be for lights in the expanse of the sky to shine upon the land.” And it happened so. Then God made the two great lights—the greater light for dominion over the day, and the lesser light as well as the stars for dominion over the night. God set them in the expanse of the sky to shine on the land and to have dominion over the day and over the night and to separate the light from the darkness. And God saw that it was good. (Genesis 1:14-18)

God makes the sun and the moon and says that they will be for “signs and for seasons and for days and years”. The Hebrew says for “otot ve moadim” – an “ot” (otot in plural) is a sign, or a letter. A “moed” (moadim in plural) is the Hebrew word God uses to talk about his feasts, his high holy days. Shabbat is also one of God’s “moadim”, and sometimes we translate it as “appointed times”, because the word also carries a meaning of fixed appointment and even destiny. So the sun, moon and stars are to communicate to us as signs (otot) and inform us of God’s “moadim” – his appointed times.

In Jewish thought, the moon has more of a connection with the Jewish people (the commandment to mark each new moon as the start of every month, and the fact that the Passover and Sukkot holidays are celebrated at the full moon) whereas the sun is more connected to the gentiles. The Jewish calendar is more lunar than solar, whereas the Gregorian calendar is more solar than lunar. Some rabbis[1] are saying that this solar eclipse over the USA is God calling the attention of America in particular. What is interesting is that the US hasn’t seen such a total eclipse like this from shore to shore for 99 years, but it will only be another seven years before it happens again, on April 8, 2024. This one will cross diagonally from north west to south east, but the following one will do the opposite, creating a criss cross over the land. (Click to Site)

Then God said, “Let there be lights in the expanse of the heavens to separate the day from the night, and let them be for signs and for seasons and for days and years; and let them be for lights in the expanse of the heavens to give light on the earth”; and it was so.God made the two great lights, the greater light to govern the day, and the lesser light to govern the night; He made the stars also. God placed them in the expanse of the heavens to give light on the earth, and to govern the day and the night, and to separate the light from the darkness; and God saw that it was good. There was evening and there was morning, a fourth day. (Genesis 1:14-19 NASB)

The Return of Christ

“There will be signs in sun and moon and stars, and on the earth dismay among nations, in perplexity at the roaring of the sea and the waves, men fainting from fear and the expectation of the things which are coming upon the world; for the powers of the heavens will be shaken. Then they will see the Son of Man coming in a cloud with power and great glory. But when these things begin to take place, straighten up and lift up your heads, because your redemption is drawing near.”

Then He told them a parable: “Behold the fig tree and all the trees;as soon as they put forth leaves, you see it and know for yourselves that summer is now near. So you also, when you see these things happening, recognize that the kingdom of God is near. Truly I say to you, this generation will not pass away until all things take place.Heaven and earth will pass away, but My words will not pass away.

“Be on guard, so that your hearts will not be weighted down with dissipation and drunkenness and the worries of life, and that day will not come on you suddenly like a trap; for it will come upon all those who dwell on the face of all the earth. But keep on the alert at all times, praying that you may have strength to escape all these things that are about to take place, and to stand before the Son of Man.”  (Luke 21:25-36 NASB)

Lake Missoula Creation Conference Coming to Missoula

By Mike Mueller, Conference Director

Why is a Creation Conference Important? Why does it Matter?

The debate is ongoing: did the world evolve or was it created? If it was created, did it take billions of years or was it made by God in six 24-hour days? Was there a global flood? How does the newest scientific evidence match up with biblical accounts? Where does Darwin fit into the picture? Who is telling the truth? A “Science and the Bible” conference will address these questions and more. Regardless of your opinions on the subject, this conference should be interesting and challenging to your thinking.

We all look at the world through a pair of glasses (our personal preconceptions) which affect how we interpret the world around us and how we make decisions about what to believe, who to follow, where to put our faith, or how to develop our opinions in life. Our worldviews can be naturalistic, humanistic, biblical, or a combination. Our starting point can greatly influence our ongoing interpretations of evidence. Many Americans used to have as their foundation a biblical worldview, but that has changed to a more naturalistic or humanistic approach to life. Many now believe current and troubling social issues are symptoms of this foundational change. Recent observational science and discovery seems to support a creator and point us back to the authority of the Holy Bible. The Bible has had more impact around the world than any other book ever written. The Bible contains an ancient account of historical science.

Today through advances in technology, science, computers, microscopes, telescopes, geology, astronomy, medicine, and in general because of the overwhelming increase of available information and knowledge, biblical answers seem reasonable for many of the most common questions about our origins. Have these questions already been answered? Is the science of origins as taught in the schools factual? Has science disproven the Bible? A number of scientists are finding reasons to answer, “No.” New scientific evidence can shed light on the age of the earth and universe, creation, and dinosaurs. This new evidence does not have widespread coverage, so the purpose of this conference is to make it available for consideration. Some evidence seems to indicate a younger earth than has previously been taught, and it is very compelling. New evidence seems to support the creation week as written in Genesis 1 and Exodus 20:11.
