Lebanon is once again teetering on the brink. As Israeli airstrikes pounded Hezbollah targets in Beirut’s southern suburbs and across southern Lebanon, the country’s fragile government delivered its harshest rebuke yet to the Iranian-backed militant group — formally declaring Hezbollah’s military actions illegal and demanding it hand over its weapons.
The shift marks a dramatic internal fracture as thousands of civilians flee renewed fighting and Lebanon faces the prospect of being pulled fully into the expanding regional war tied to Iran.

Airstrikes Hit Beirut Suburbs
The Israeli military confirmed it struck “Hezbollah command centers and weapons storage facilities in Beirut,” including a building housing Hezbollah-aligned Al-Manar television studios in the city’s southern suburbs.
Lebanon’s Health Ministry reported at least 52 people killed and more than 150 wounded in overnight strikes in Beirut and southern Lebanon. Schools were closed nationwide as highways jammed with families fleeing south toward the capital.
At one public school converted into a shelter, displaced families carried mattresses and plastic bags stuffed with belongings, waiting for classroom space to open.
The strikes followed Hezbollah’s rocket and drone attacks on northern Israel, which the group said were in retaliation for Israel’s actions against Iran.

Government Condemns Hezbollah
In an emergency Cabinet meeting, President Joseph Aoun sharply criticized Hezbollah’s unilateral decision to enter the conflict.
“There is a side that wants to drag the country to matters that we have nothing to do with,” Aoun said, referring to Hezbollah.
Prime Minister Nawaf Salam went further, declaring that only the Lebanese state has authority over decisions of war and peace. He announced Hezbollah’s military activities are banned going forward and instructed security agencies to prevent missile or drone launches from Lebanese territory.
It is the strongest official stance Beirut has taken against Hezbollah — a group that holds seats in parliament and maintains a powerful armed wing.

Hezbollah a Shadow of Its Former Power
Once considered Iran’s most formidable regional proxy, Hezbollah has been severely weakened by sustained Israeli strikes since 2024. Senior leaders have been eliminated, weapons depots destroyed, and border villages heavily damaged.
Despite launching drones and rockets toward Israeli military sites near Haifa, analysts suggest Hezbollah no longer possesses the overwhelming deterrent power it once held.
Israeli officials have signaled they are keeping “all options on the table,” including a potential ground incursion into southern Lebanon. Over 100,000 Israeli reservists have reportedly been called up since the conflict with Iran intensified.

A Nation on Edge
Lebanon’s Minister of Social Affairs stated that 171 shelters have been opened, housing nearly 29,000 displaced persons. During the 2024 war, more than one million Lebanese were displaced at peak fighting.
Now, as Hezbollah claims it is acting in solidarity with Iran, Lebanese leaders appear desperate to prevent another devastating full-scale war.
The internal tension is palpable: a weakened militia under pressure from Israel, a government attempting to assert sovereignty, and a population exhausted by years of instability.
Prophetic Context
Scripture speaks repeatedly of turmoil along Israel’s northern border. Isaiah 17 (NASB 1995) warns of sudden destruction and regional upheaval in the Levant.
Lebanon — long caught between foreign influence and internal fragmentation — now stands at a crossroads once again.
When militias act independently of national governments, instability multiplies. The Bible consistently reminds us that divided houses struggle to stand (Mark 3:25 NASB 1995).

Conclusion
Lebanon now faces a defining moment.
As Israeli airstrikes intensify and Hezbollah fires rockets in retaliation, the Lebanese government has drawn a rare public line against the militia. Whether that stance holds — or fractures under pressure — could determine whether Lebanon becomes fully engulfed in the widening Iran-linked war.
For now, thousands seek shelter, drones buzz over Beirut’s skyline, and a fragile state balances on the edge of another devastating conflict.
