Tensions between Moscow and Western allies surged to a dangerous new level this weekend after senior Russian officials openly threatened military strikes against European capitals. The warnings follow joint U.S.–Israeli operations against Iran and the reported death of Iranian Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei.
According to Russian parliamentary speaker Vyacheslav Volodin, Europe could face retaliatory action if Western missile systems continue expanding near Russia’s borders.
“Such a move will lead to a retaliatory strike using more powerful weapons,” Volodin warned, adding that the “tragedy may affect the whole of Europe.”
The rhetoric marks one of the clearest signals yet that the Kremlin is redefining European NATO members as direct participants in the widening conflict.

Other commentators argued that the current geopolitical climate has “untied the hands” of President Vladimir Putin to act decisively in defense of Russian security interests.
The Russian Foreign Ministry described the U.S.–Israeli strike on Iran as a “preplanned and unprovoked act of armed aggression,” warning of potential humanitarian and even “radiological catastrophe.”
