A mass shooting early Sunday morning at Buford’s Backyard Beer Garden in Austin, Texas, left three people dead — including the suspected gunman — and 14 others injured. Federal authorities are now investigating whether the attack constitutes an act of terrorism.
According to Austin Police Chief Lisa Davis, the suspect, identified by federal sources as 53-year-old Ndiaga Diagne, a naturalized U.S. citizen originally from Senegal, opened fire outside the bar shortly before 2 a.m. Officers responding to the scene shot and killed the suspect after he continued firing into a crowded patio area.
The FBI confirmed it is examining “indicators on the subject and in his vehicle that indicate potential nexus to terrorism,” though officials cautioned that it is too early to determine motive.

Authorities say the suspect drove past the popular Sixth Street bar multiple times before initiating the assault.
Chief Davis stated that Diagne:
- Activated his hazard lights before rolling down his window
- Continued firing at pedestrians before officers engaged
- Fired a pistol from inside his SUV at patrons on the patio
- Parked and exited the vehicle with a rifle
Police returned fire and killed the suspect on West Sixth Street.

Alex Doran, acting special agent in charge of the FBI’s San Antonio field office, told reporters that investigators found materials in the suspect’s vehicle that raised concern.
“There were indicators on the subject and in his vehicle that indicate potential nexus to terrorism,” Doran said. He emphasized that it is still too early to determine whether the case involves domestic or international terrorism.
Authorities confirmed there were no explosives found in the vehicle, though bomb technicians were deployed out of caution.
