The investigation into the disappearance of 84-year-old Nancy Guthrie, mother of “Today” show co-host Savannah Guthrie, has escalated dramatically. The Federal Bureau of Investigation has now increased its reward to $100,000 for information leading to her location or the arrest of those responsible — after receiving more than 13,000 tips from the public.

Guthrie vanished from her Catalina Foothills home between the night of January 31 and the early morning hours of February 1. Authorities believe she was abducted. Blood drops found on her porch, combined with the fact that she requires medication, have heightened fears for her safety.

First Suspect Description Released
For the first time, the FBI has publicly described a suspect. According to forensic analysis conducted by the bureau’s Operational Technology Division, the suspect is a male standing approximately 5’9” to 5’10” with an average build.

He was seen carrying a black 25-liter “Ozark Trail Hiker Pack,” a Walmart private-label backpack.

Surveillance video from Tucson reportedly captured a man with a similar backpack near Guthrie’s residence around the time she disappeared. Authorities are urging anyone who may recognize the backpack or suspect description to come forward immediately.

Searches, Tips, And A Person Of Interest
On February 11, federal agents conducted extensive searches along roadways near Guthrie’s home. A person of interest was detained but later released without charges.

The Pima County Sheriff’s Department has asked residents within a two-mile radius to provide security footage from January 1 through February 2. Investigators hope overlooked camera angles or vehicle movements may help refine leads.

More than 13,000 tips have been processed since her disappearance — a staggering volume that underscores the national attention surrounding the case.

Bitcoin Ransom Demands Raise New Questions
The case has taken a modern twist with reported ransom demands involving cryptocurrency. According to reports, an email demanded one Bitcoin — valued at approximately $66,000 — in exchange for information about the alleged kidnapper’s identity.

Blockchain expert David Richards of BlockchainUnmasked explained that while Bitcoin transactions are public, identities behind them require investigative linkage. “An address is just a string of characters, kind of like seeing a license plate number without DMV records,” Richards stated, noting that transactions leave digital “breadcrumbs,” particularly when funds are converted into cash through exchanges.

As of February 12, no ransom has been paid.

Federal-State Tensions Under The Surface?
A high-level federal source reportedly described the early handling of the case as “insane,” alleging that local authorities did not initially seek federal assistance. The FBI reportedly reached out on February 2, with involvement initially limited by jurisdictional constraints.

The sheriff’s department has not publicly addressed those specific assertions. However, recent developments suggest the federal role has expanded significantly.

Prophetic Context: Light In The Darkness
Scripture reminds us in Ephesians 5:11 (NASB 1995), “Do not participate in the unfruitful deeds of darkness, but instead even expose them.” In cases like this, transparency, vigilance, and truth are essential.

Justice requires both diligence and unity. When agencies cooperate effectively, evil is confronted. When division emerges, public confidence suffers.

Conclusion
With the reward now raised to $100,000 and more than 13,000 tips under review, the search for Nancy Guthrie remains urgent. The newly released suspect description and backpack detail may prove pivotal.

Anyone with information is urged to contact the FBI at 1-800-CALL-FBI.

The nation is watching. And time matters.
