Eleven days after Nancy Guthrie vanished from her Tucson-area home, federal investigators are widening their search — and now urgently asking the public for surveillance footage from specific dates surrounding her disappearance.

With no confirmed suspect, no verified ransom channel, and conflicting signals from written notes sent to media outlets, the case has entered a critical investigative phase. Authorities are now combing through security footage not just from Guthrie’s home — but from miles beyond it.

The Federal Bureau of Investigation has requested surveillance video from residents and businesses covering the period between the night of January 31 and the days immediately following.

Nancy Guthrie, 84, disappeared after being dropped off at her home outside Tucson. Authorities later released footage from her doorbell camera showing a masked individual wearing gloves and appearing to carry a handgun while attempting to tamper with the device.

Investigators now believe additional cameras — potentially miles away — could hold crucial clues about a vehicle entering or leaving the area.

Former FBI agent Katherine Schweit said that without eyewitnesses or direct communication from a kidnapper, investigators must “scrutinize recordings from cameras that could be miles away.”

A Case That Doesn’t Fit the Script

Savannah Guthrie has publicly pleaded for her mother’s safe return, stating: “We believe she is still alive. Bring her home.”

But law enforcement experts say this case does not follow the typical ransom-abduction pattern.

Chip Massey, a retired FBI hostage negotiator, noted the absence of direct communication is highly unusual.

“If I can’t hear a voice, if they can’t hear mine, a lot of my training and background is now useless.”

A possible ransom note referenced an Apple Watch Guthrie was believed to be wearing. However, the note reportedly failed to establish a clear communication method — an omission experts say complicates negotiation efforts.

A second note sent to a local TV station differed significantly from the first and included no ransom demand.

Theories Under Consideration

Authorities have confirmed Guthrie’s blood was found on her porch. She has mobility challenges and requires daily medication.

Experts suggest several possible scenarios:

  • A botched burglary that escalated
  • A ransom attempt that spiraled beyond control
  • A personal grievance
  • A suspect frightened by the rapid national attention

Jim Cavanaugh, a retired ATF agent, questioned the legitimacy of the ransom note.

“Anybody sitting in Kathmandu could hit Google and see those pictures and demand bitcoin.”

He also dismissed speculation about cartel involvement despite Tucson’s proximity to the southern border, saying there is no indication such groups would target someone like Guthrie.

Behavioral Profiling and Data Analysis

The FBI’s Behavioral Analysis Unit in Quantico is reportedly reviewing large volumes of data to identify patterns, linguistic clues, and movement timelines.

Michael Alcazar, a retired NYPD detective, said the newly released footage will likely generate a wave of tips.

“One hundred percent, somebody is going to recognize him.”

He noted the suspect’s head-down posture suggests familiarity with the property — possibly indicating prior visits.

A Long Road Ahead

Former agent Schweit cautioned that real investigations rarely unfold like Hollywood scripts.

“It’s not a straight line… That only happens in the movies.”

Authorities are urging anyone with surveillance footage from January 31 onward — especially in the northern Tucson area — to contact the FBI immediately.

The window for actionable leads narrows with each passing day. Yet experts remain confident in federal investigative capabilities.

“She’s out there,” Schweit said. “And they will find her. We just want to find her in time.”
