In a striking display of congressional independence, the Republican-controlled U.S. House voted 219-211 on Wednesday to challenge President Donald Trump’s tariffs on Canada — a largely symbolic but politically significant rebuke of a signature White House trade policy.

The resolution seeks to terminate the national emergency Trump declared to justify the tariffs. While unlikely to become law without presidential approval, the vote signals growing unease among lawmakers ahead of the midterm elections, especially as businesses and consumers feel the strain of rising costs.
