Attorney General Pam Bondi faced a tense and combative hearing Wednesday as lawmakers pressed her over the Trump administration’s handling of the Jeffrey Epstein files.
For more than five hours before the House Judiciary Committee, Bondi fielded pointed questions about document releases, redactions, survivor protections, and whether additional indictments are forthcoming. Instead of offering detailed answers, the attorney general often deflected, accused Democrats of political theater, and turned criticism toward prior administrations.
The hearing exposed deep partisan fractures — and even rare Republican dissent.
Democratic lawmakers pressed Bondi on what they called a “reckless and dangerous” document release that failed to fully shield victims’ names. A group of Epstein survivors seated in the hearing room had released a letter criticizing the Justice Department’s redactions, warning the disclosures could discourage victims from reporting abuse.
Rep. Pramila Jayapal asked Bondi to apologize directly to the survivors present. Rep. Hank Johnson questioned whether the department had “outed” victims.
Bondi did not issue a direct apology.
Instead, she stated she was “deeply sorry for what any victim has been through,” while condemning Epstein’s crimes and accusing Democrats of attempting to distract from the administration’s accomplishments.
At one point, Committee Chairman Jim Jordan repeatedly banged his gavel as exchanges devolved into crosstalk.

A Rare Republican Rebuke
While most Republicans defended Bondi and criticized former Attorney General Merrick Garland for allegedly failing to pursue transparency earlier, Rep. Thomas Massie broke ranks.
Massie, a co-sponsor of the Epstein Files Transparency Act, questioned the DOJ’s compliance with deadlines and redaction standards.
“Who’s responsible?” Massie asked, calling the release of unredacted victim names a “massive failure.”
Bondi responded by accusing Massie of having “Trump derangement syndrome” and labeled him a “hypocrite.”
Later, Rep. Chip Roy asked whether additional indictments are forthcoming. Bondi acknowledged there are ongoing investigations but offered no details.

Scrutiny Over Trump Officials’ Ties
Rep. Jamie Raskin claimed that former President Donald Trump’s name appears repeatedly in unredacted Epstein materials — though no evidence has emerged linking Trump to criminal activity in the case.
Democrats also questioned whether the DOJ has examined ties between Epstein and senior Trump administration officials, including Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick.
Bondi said Lutnick had addressed his ties publicly and criticized lawmakers for focusing on Epstein rather than border security issues.
An exchange with Rep. Becca Balint turned sharply personal when Bondi corrected her title mid-question.
“This is not a game, secretary,” Balint said.
“I am attorney general,” Bondi replied.
“My apologies, I couldn’t tell,” Balint shot back.

Broader Implications
The hearing underscores ongoing political sensitivity surrounding Epstein’s network and the handling of records related to his crimes.
While millions of pages of documents have been released, controversy remains over:
- Redaction standards
- Missed statutory deadlines
- Potential additional indictments
- The scope of ongoing investigations
The Justice Department maintains investigations remain active. Lawmakers across party lines continue demanding clarity.
The Epstein files remain one of the most politically charged and emotionally fraught legal sagas of the modern era — and Wednesday’s hearing suggests the battle over transparency, accountability, and responsibility is far from over.
