A quiet mountain community in northeastern British Columbia was shattered Tuesday afternoon after a mass shooting at Tumbler Ridge Secondary School left at least 10 people dead and more than two dozen injured.

Authorities say the suspected shooter — believed to be a female — was found dead at the scene from what appears to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound. The motive remains unclear as investigators work to piece together one of the deadliest school attacks in Canadian history.

According to the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP):

  • Six victims were found deceased inside Tumbler Ridge Secondary School
  • Two additional victims were discovered at a nearby residence
  • One person died while being transported to the hospital
  • The suspect was pronounced dead at the scene

More than 25 individuals were injured, including two with life-threatening wounds.
