Super Bowl viewers were left ‘sickened’ after English translations of Spanish lyrics from Bad Bunny’s music began circulating across social media following his headline-making halftime performance. What initially sounded to many like upbeat Latin pop quickly ignited backlash once the lyrics were translated, with critics questioning why the NFL elevated such material on the nation’s biggest stage — watched by families and children across America.

The backlash erupted just hours after the show when conservative commentator Megan Basham shared screenshots of translated lyrics, describing them as “the most obscene lyrics ever to be performed at a Super Bowl halftime.” In one widely cited track, the rapper boasts about explicit sexual acts, drug use, and casual hookups, with repeated references to sex performed while intoxicated. One paraphrased line circulating online suggested that a woman’s partner is inadequate if he does not perform a specific sexual act.

“These are the lyrics Christians are being told they should have embraced and celebrated,” Basham wrote, pushing back against accusations that criticism amounted to an attack on Puerto Rican culture rather than explicit content. Others quickly echoed her reaction. Turning Point USA spokesman Andrew Kolvet summed it up bluntly, calling the translations “pure degeneracy,” while other users described the lyrics as lacking “subtlety” and “class.”

As the debate spread, many pointed to a recurring issue: songs performed in foreign languages often receive less scrutiny because much of the audience does not understand the words. “Language barriers do a lot of heavy lifting,” one user wrote. “The content doesn’t change just because the language does.” Critics stressed the lyrics were not metaphors or innuendo, but straightforward sexual references that would almost certainly provoke backlash if performed in English during a family-oriented broadcast.

Defenders of the performance pushed back, arguing the halftime show emphasized family, community, and cultural pride. Conservative commentators challenged those claims, asking defenders to identify which lyrics actually reflected those values. Others accused critics of hypocrisy, noting that American rock and hip-hop artists with explicit English-language lyrics have appeared at major events before without comparable outrage.

The controversy escalated further after Donald Trump weighed in on Truth Social, calling the performance “absolutely terrible” and “an affront to the Greatness of America.” Trump criticized both the language barrier and the choreography, saying, “Nobody understands a word this guy is saying, and the dancing is disgusting, especially for young children watching throughout the U.S.A. and the world.”

The halftime spectacle transformed Levi’s Stadium into a stylized sugarcane plantation featuring domino players, a Latino wedding, and political messaging centered on pan-American unity. Supporters praised it as a celebration of Hispanic culture, while critics viewed it as a politicized display paired with an artist whose lyrical content clashes with mainstream American values.

Following the show, Bad Bunny removed all posts from his social media accounts, including his profile photo. His representatives have not responded to requests for comment. The fallout has reignited a broader debate over whether America’s most-watched event applies consistent standards regardless of language — or whether explicit content is increasingly being normalized under the banner of cultural expression.
