Just days ago, Trump slapped 10% tariffs on Denmark, Norway, Sweden, France, Germany, the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, and Finland after reports emerged that European nations were moving troops to Greenland in response to U.S. intentions.
Those tariffs were scheduled to rise to 25% on June 1, remaining “due and payable until such time as a Deal is reached for the Complete and Total purchase of Greenland.”
Now, Trump says those tariffs will not go into effect — for now.
“Based upon this understanding, I will not be imposing the Tariffs that were scheduled to go into effect on February 1st,” Trump said.
Trump: Only the U.S. Can Secure Greenland
Prior to the meeting, Trump bluntly dismissed Denmark’s resistance and made clear that the United States alone is capable of defending Greenland from Chinese and Russian influence.
“No nation or group of nations is in any position to be able to secure Greenland, other than the United States,” Trump said. “We’re a great power, much greater than people even understand.”
He added pointedly: “I think they found that out two weeks ago in Venezuela.”
Trump further argued that Greenland is not merely a distant territory, but geographically and strategically part of North America’s northern frontier.
“This enormous unsecured island is actually part of North America on the northern frontier of the Western Hemisphere,” Trump said. “That’s our territory.”

Trump’s statement also revealed discussions underway regarding America’s Golden Dome defense system as it pertains to Greenland and Arctic security — signaling long-term military integration rather than a symbolic acquisition.
