The sudden withdrawal of U.S. forces from key positions along Syria’s Euphrates River has unleashed a chain reaction now threatening to unravel what remained of post-caliphate stability in the region. As American troops vacated areas protecting strategic oil fields, jihadist forces aligned with Syria’s new Islamist regime rapidly moved in—displacing Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) units and triggering one of the largest ISIS-related prison failures since the collapse of the so-called caliphate.
What followed was chaos.

The Collapse of SDF Control
Within hours of the U.S. pullback, forces loyal to Syrian leader Ahmad al-Sharaa—formerly known as Abu Muhammad al-Julani—began seizing territory previously held by the SDF, particularly in northeastern Syria. Kurdish positions in and around Al-Shaddadi, Al-Hasakah, and rural Raqqa were overrun, forcing a retreat toward shrinking enclaves near Kobani, Al-Qamishli, and parts of Hasakah province.
According to multiple regional reports, the fall of Al-Shaddadi had catastrophic consequences: approximately 1,500 ISIS detainees were released or escaped after SDF forces lost control of the prison complex they had guarded with U.S. backing.
Syrian authorities later claimed they had “re-secured” the prison and re-arrested dozens of escapees. Even if true, the damage was already done.
ISIS Re-Emerges Through the Back Door
The prison collapse marks one of the most serious ISIS-related security failures in years. In addition to the Al-Shaddadi escape, roughly 9,000 ISIS fighters remain detained in former SDF-controlled facilities, while more than 24,000 ISIS-linked detainees are held at the Al-Hol camp—now increasingly vulnerable as jihadist factions advance.
Security analysts warn that even a partial release dramatically increases the risk of ISIS regeneration across Syria, Iraq, Turkey, and beyond. Israel, in particular, faces elevated long-term threat exposure as jihadist networks regain manpower and mobility.
Kurdish Mobilization and Regional Fallout
The Kurdish response has been swift and furious. The Kurdistan Freedom Party announced it would assist the SDF in resisting further advances. Kurdish leadership rejected integration terms offered by Damascus, declaring a general mobilization and calling the moment one of “historic responsibility.”
Protests erupted across Kurdish regions in Iraq and Turkey. Demonstrators gathered outside the U.S. consulate in Erbil, accusing Washington of betrayal. Kurdish civilians in northeastern Syria reportedly armed themselves as clashes intensified near Kobani and surrounding villages.
Meanwhile, Kurdish Peshmerga units from Iraq are preparing to enter Syrian territory, raising fears of a broader regional escalation.
U.S. Policy Shift Under Fire
At the center of the controversy is U.S. envoy Tom Barrack, who publicly confirmed that Washington’s priority has shifted away from supporting the SDF toward integrating Kurdish forces into a centralized Syrian state.
The argument: the SDF was formed to fight ISIS when Damascus was weak. Now that the new Syrian government claims to oppose ISIS, continued U.S. backing of Kurdish autonomy is deemed unnecessary.
Critics call that assumption dangerously naïve.

Strategic and Prophetic Implications
This episode exposes a hard truth: alliances in the Middle East are often transactional—and temporary. The Kurds, who bore the brunt of the ground war against ISIS, now find themselves isolated as geopolitical priorities shift.
For Israel, the lesson is unmistakable. When crisis comes, reliance on external guarantees may prove fatal. Scripture warns of such moments. “Cursed is the man who trusts in mankind and makes flesh his strength” (Jeremiah 17:5, NASB 1977).
Yet Scripture also promises deliverance: “The Lord will go forth like a warrior… He will prevail against His enemies” (Isaiah 42:13).
The Middle East is entering another season of shaking. What rises from the ruins will not be accidental.
