As Danish politicians publicly dismiss President Donald Trump’s warnings about Russian and Chinese threats to Greenland, Denmark’s own intelligence service is telling a very different story behind closed doors. A newly released assessment from the Danish Defence Intelligence Service (DDIS) bluntly confirms that both Russia and China view Greenland and the Arctic as strategically vital—and are actively positioning themselves for future military operations in the region.

The contradiction between public denials and classified reality has reignited debate over Trump’s insistence that U.S. control of Greenland is a national security necessity.

What Danish Intelligence Actually Warned
In its Intelligence Outlook 2025, released just weeks ago, DDIS warned that “China is preparing for a military presence in the Arctic” and that “China’s long-term Arctic interests include Greenland.” The report details Chinese air, sea, and submersible activities in Arctic waters and notes that Beijing is laying the groundwork for future military operations.

The assessment also describes intensifying military cooperation between Russia and China—what analysts increasingly refer to as the “DragonBear” alliance—aimed at challenging NATO dominance in the High North.

Russia, according to the report, “uses every available tool” to monitor the waters surrounding Greenland, Iceland, the Faroe Islands, and the United Kingdom. These activities are explicitly described as preparations for a potential confrontation with NATO, including submarine deployments, surveillance flights, and the use of civilian vessels for intelligence collection.

The Strategic Importance of Greenland and the GIUK Gap
Central to the intelligence warning is the Greenland-Iceland-UK (GIUK) Gap, described as the primary maritime gateway between the Arctic and the Atlantic. Danish intelligence states that in a conflict scenario, Russia would attempt to disrupt U.S.-European supply lines by sending attack submarines through the GIUK Gap while tracking NATO submarine movements.

Despite public claims to the contrary, the report confirms that Russia routinely deploys submarines, surface vessels, and aircraft near Greenland’s coast. China, while not yet maintaining a permanent military presence, is pursuing research, commercial, and logistical footholds that could enable future deployment.

Missile Trajectories and Nuclear Reality
The intelligence report includes maps showing likely missile flight paths in the event of war—many of which pass directly over Greenland. The shortest route between North America and Russia runs over the Arctic, making Greenland a frontline early-warning node.

The report highlights the role of the U.S.-operated Pituffik Space Base (formerly Thule Air Base), whose radar systems are critical for detecting incoming ballistic missiles. For Washington, the Arctic represents the first and most vital line of defense in a great-power conflict.

China, the report warns, is seeking parity with U.S. and Russian nuclear submarine capabilities by developing the ability to operate missile submarines beneath Arctic ice—a capability Beijing hopes to achieve within five to ten years.

Public Denials vs. Strategic Reality
Despite these findings, Danish politicians and diplomats have aggressively dismissed Trump’s statements as exaggerated or “delusional.” Chinese state media and the Foreign Ministry echoed those denials, accusing the U.S. of manufacturing a “China threat” for selfish gain.

Yet the same Danish intelligence assessment explicitly states that China is preparing for Arctic military operations and that Russia is expanding its military footprint while exploiting Western sanctions to deepen cooperation with Beijing.

The report warns that Russia and China may conduct joint Arctic military exercises as early as 2026, using cooperation as strategic signaling toward the United States and NATO. Russia provides operational expertise, while China brings industrial scale and long-term strategic ambition.

Both nations view the Arctic not only as a military theater but as an economic prize—rich in resources and offering alternative shipping routes that bypass Western-controlled chokepoints like the Suez Canal and the Strait of Malacca.

Prophetic and Strategic Implications
Scripture warns that in the last days, nations will maneuver for control of land, resources, and strategic gates. “I will bring you against My land, so that the nations may know Me” (Ezekiel 38:16, NASB 1977). Greenland—remote, resource-rich, and militarily decisive—fits the pattern of a strategic gate long overlooked and now fiercely contested.
