Alongside rare earths, the deposit also contains significant uranium. In April 2021, Greenland’s left-wing Inuit Ataqatigiit party swept into power after campaigning on an explicit promise to ban uranium mining.

Seven months later, Greenland’s parliament passed a law prohibiting mining of any deposit containing more than 100 parts per million of uranium — a rule that instantly rendered Kvanefjeld illegal. The site’s uranium concentration sits at 300 ppm.

“Our assessment is that we have the right to get an exploitation license,” CFO Miles Guy told Danish newspaper Politiken. “They passed a law at the 11th hour to stop this project.”

The company estimates the mine would generate 1.5 billion Danish kroner ($220 million) annually for Greenland over 37 years — nearly 10% of Greenland’s entire economy each year. Greenland’s 2021 GDP stood at just $3.24 billion, making the demanded compensation more than three times the nation’s annual output.

Yet Greenland’s leadership remains unmoved.

“The people have spoken and the people are right, the project will not happen,” Prime Minister Múte Egede declared.

The mine’s opponents cite environmental and cultural risks. A 2021 report by the UN Special Rapporteur on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples warned the project could contaminate local water and sheep farms. Uranium waste would be stored behind a tailings dam only five kilometers from the town of Narsaq.

“What if the dam doesn’t hold for the thousands of years it has to?” asked Greenlandic geologist Minik Rosing.
