According to Russia’s Ministry of Defense, the attack was a direct response to a coordinated Ukrainian drone assault on Putin’s residence in Russia’s Novgorod region on December 28–29, involving 91 long-range UAVs launched from Ukraine’s Sumy and Chernihiv regions. Russian air defenses reportedly destroyed the incoming drones before they caused damage or casualties.

Though Ukraine disputes targeting Putin’s residence — and the Trump administration has recently softened its initial assessment — Moscow says the intent of the attack was unmistakable and demanded retaliation.

Shortly before midnight on January 9, Ukraine’s air defense networks detected a medium-range ballistic missile traveling at approximately 13,000 km/h, launched from Russia’s Kapustin Yar test site. Ukrainian forces confirmed the missile could not be intercepted. Explosions were reported near Lviv, with Ukrainian officials acknowledging a hit on a critical infrastructure facility. What Makes Oreshnik Different

The Oreshnik is among the world’s most powerful conventional weapons. First deployed in combat in November 2024, the missile releases multiple self-guided warheads at Mach 10, generating impact temperatures approaching 4,000°C. President Putin has likened its kinetic force to a meteorite strike, stating that everything at the epicenter is reduced to ash.

While non-nuclear, Russian military analysts acknowledge that clustered Oreshnik strikes rival nuclear-level destruction — without radioactive fallout.

Strategic Implications

This rare strike on western Ukraine — particularly Lviv, long viewed as a safer rear area — signals a deliberate message to NATO and the West. Moscow has now declared that any future deployment of Western “peacekeeping” forces inside Ukraine will be treated as legitimate military targets.
