With landlines down, mobile networks offline, electricity failing, and the internet cut nationwide, Iran has become — in the words of many observers — a prison holding 90 million hostages. Gunfire echoes through major cities as the ruling regime attempts to smother an uprising that is rapidly shifting from economic protest to political rebellion.

The demonstrations, now entering their second week, were triggered by deepening economic collapse, shortages of essential goods, rampant corruption, and decades of repression. Security forces remain deployed in force. While the Basij militia has so far remained loyal to the regime, the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) has not yet unleashed its full repressive capabilities — a decision that analysts believe will change as the regime’s options dwindle.

Analysts describe tonight’s protests as a qualitative shift: larger crowds, greater boldness, and the erosion of fear. However, the opposition still lacks unified leadership and coherent organization, a vulnerability now exacerbated by the loss of internet connectivity.
