Tensions between Russia and Ukraine escalated sharply this week after Moscow accused Kyiv of orchestrating a large-scale drone attack against Russian President Vladimir Putin’s Valdai residence — a claim Ukrainian officials categorically deny. The allegation, coupled with violent rhetoric from senior Russian figures, threatens to derail fragile peace efforts that U.S. President Donald Trump recently described as “closer than ever before.”

According to Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, Ukraine launched 91 long-range unmanned aerial vehicles toward Putin’s heavily protected residence in the Novgorod region on the night of December 28–29. Russian air defenses allegedly intercepted all drones.
