Federal investigators have dramatically escalated their presence in Minnesota as one of the largest pandemic-era fraud schemes in U.S. history continues to unravel. FBI Director Kash Patel confirmed Sunday that his agency surged personnel and investigative resources into the state long before public outrage erupted online, calling the criminal network responsible for the theft of federal aid “the tip of a very large iceberg.”
Massive Fraud Network Comes Into Focus
In a statement posted to X, Patel revealed that 78 individuals have been indicted and 57 convicted in what prosecutors say is a sprawling $250 million fraud operation centered on federal food assistance intended for vulnerable children during COVID.
The scheme allegedly used sham vendors, shell companies, and large-scale money laundering connected to the so-called Feeding Our Future network. Charges include wire fraud, conspiracy, money laundering, and obstruction of justice.
“These criminals didn’t just engage in historic fraud,” Patel said. “They tried to subvert justice as well.”
One case involved defendants attempting to bribe a juror with $120,000 in cash. Several participants have already received lengthy prison sentences, including one 10-year term and nearly $48 million in restitution orders.

Patel stressed that the FBI had already deployed extensive resources to Minnesota before a recent viral video exposed an allegedly fraudulent daycare operation in Minneapolis that reportedly received millions in state-backed funding while remaining largely inactive.
“We will continue to follow the money and protect children,” Patel wrote, adding that many suspects are now being referred for immigration review, including potential denaturalization and deportation proceedings.
Joe Thompson, first assistant U.S. attorney, described the scope of abuse in Minnesota’s public programs as “astronomically high,” spanning child nutrition, housing assistance, and autism services.
“I’m sure everyone is wondering how much of this $18 billion was fraud,” Thompson said. “That’s the $18 billion question.”
Political Fallout and Accountability Questions
Republican leaders including Rep. Tom Emmer demanded immediate scrutiny of Gov. Tim Walz’s administration. Vice President JD Vance called the scandal “a microcosm of the immigration fraud in our system,” warning that political power and taxpayer money were being siphoned away from Minnesotans.
President Donald Trump labeled Minnesota “a hub of fraudulent money laundering activity” and moved to terminate Temporary Protected Status for Somali nationals in the state.
