Strange, lighted objects—often described as drone-like—have been observed over Sweetwater County’s Red Desert and the Jim Bridger Power Plant for at least thirteen months. The objects typically appear at night, flying at high altitude and frequently in coordinated formations.

Sweetwater County Sheriff John Grossnickle has personally witnessed the objects, according to his spokesman Jason Mower, who confirmed sightings as recently as Saturday night.

“We’ve worked with everybody,” Mower said. “We’ve done everything we can to figure out what they are, and nobody wants to give us any answers.”

Officials say the objects fly too high to be safely intercepted from the ground and do not behave like recreational drones.

Law Enforcement and Lawmakers Left in the Dark

The sheriff’s office even brought U.S. Rep. Harriet Hageman to observe the objects firsthand. While her office has not publicly commented, the incident underscores how seriously local officials are taking the matter.

Despite repeated outreach to federal agencies, Sweetwater County has received no definitive explanation. Over time, residents stopped calling in sightings—not because the activity ended, but because it became routine.

“It’s like the new normal,” Mower said.

State Officials Raise Questions—Carefully

During a recent budget hearing, Wyoming State Sen. Tim Salazar, chair of the Senate Appropriations Committee, directly asked the Wyoming National Guard about “UAPs” (unidentified anomalous phenomena).

Adjutant General Greg Porter declined to discuss the topic publicly and noted that the Guard currently has no drone interdiction equipment budgeted, even though state law now allows the governor to deploy the Guard to protect critical infrastructure.

Porter also acknowledged a key challenge: rapidly evolving drone technology means equipment purchased today could be obsolete within a year.

Sweetwater County is not alone. Sheriffs in multiple Wyoming counties—including Niobrara County—reported similar activity last winter. Some described grid-like flight patterns and prolonged observation of vehicles on the ground.

While many sightings subsided earlier this year, none of the officials involved reported receiving clear explanations.

Federal Silence, Ongoing Questions

At the national level, Congress has continued to examine unexplained aerial phenomena. The House Oversight Committee held hearings in 2023 and 2024 to protect whistleblowers reporting UAP encounters, and military pilots have testified under oath about objects that defy known performance capabilities.

Federal agencies have acknowledged unexplained incidents but consistently stopped short of identifying their origin, purpose, or operators.
