A Jewish family in Redlands, California, was targeted in a disturbing drive-by shooting after their home—clearly decorated for the Hanukkah holiday—came under fire late Friday night. While no one was physically injured, authorities say approximately 20 shots were fired at the residence in what police are now investigating as a potential hate crime, underscoring growing concerns over rising antisemitism in the United States.

Attack on a Visible Expression of Faith
Redlands police confirmed the home was struck during a drive-by incident in which assailants allegedly fired multiple rounds at a house displaying inflatable Hanukkah decorations. According to investigators, the weapon used is believed to have been an airsoft gun, based on the absence of shell casings and a lack of muzzle flash on surveillance footage. Despite this, the volume of shots and the explicit hate-filled language reported make the incident no less serious.

The homeowner, Rodgir Cohen, stated that after the shooting, individuals in the vehicle shouted explicit antisemitic and racist slurs, including “F–ck the Jews” and “Free Palestine.” Cohen later told CBS News that the incident reflects how ignorance and hatred can quickly escalate into acts of intimidation and violence.

Victims Speak Out
Cohen and his wife initially believed the sounds were fireworks before reviewing their security footage. The realization that their home had been targeted left the family shaken. “We always know there’s antisemitism and hate and racism out there,” Cohen’s wife said. “But when it comes by your house, it’s that reminder of how real it is.”

Cohen, a religion lecturer at Cal State Fullerton and a former Redlands political candidate who ran on a tough-on-crime platform, said he and his son had encountered the alleged assailants shortly before the shooting, further deepening the family’s fear.

Law Enforcement and Community Response
The City of Redlands condemned the attack, noting it occurred as Jewish families worldwide were celebrating Hanukkah. Police stated they believe the family was targeted specifically because of the religious decorations and confirmed the case is being investigated as a hate crime. Additional patrols have been assigned to the neighborhood and to local places of worship.

The Los Angeles chapter of the Anti-Defamation League also denounced the incident, calling it a “dangerous and despicable act of violence.” According to ADL data, California recorded 1,344 antisemitic incidents last year—second only to New York—highlighting a troubling trend of harassment, vandalism, and assault against Jewish communities.

Deep Dive: A Broader Pattern
This attack coincided with reports of a major antisemitic assault on Jews celebrating Hanukkah in Sydney, Australia, reinforcing concerns that hostility toward Jewish communities is becoming increasingly normalized globally. While no physical damage was reported in Redlands, the psychological impact and the intent behind the act are clear, supported by video evidence, eyewitness accounts, and corroborating statements from law enforcement.

Prophetic Context
Scripture repeatedly warns of increasing hostility toward God’s people in the last days. The prophet Zechariah wrote, “I will make Jerusalem a cup that causes reeling to all the peoples around” (Zechariah 12:2, NASB 1977). Jesus Himself warned that hatred and lawlessness would increase (Matthew 24:12, NASB 1977). Incidents like this reflect not only social decay but a spiritual condition foretold in biblical prophecy.

Strategic Implications
From a national perspective, the attack raises serious questions about public safety, law enforcement deterrence, and the cultural tolerance of extremist rhetoric. When explicit hate speech is excused or minimized, it emboldens individuals willing to translate words into action. Protecting religious freedom and public order requires a firm response rooted in equal justice under the law.

Conclusion
The Redlands attack may not have caused physical injuries, but it delivered a chilling message to a family—and a community—simply for openly practicing their faith. As antisemitic incidents continue to rise, this case serves as a stark reminder that vigilance, accountability, and moral clarity are essential if communities are to remain safe and free.
