More than 1 million bags of shredded cheese sold at major U.S. retailers—including Walmart, Publix, Aldi, and Target—have been recalled due to possible metal fragments, the FDA confirmed on Dec. 1. The contaminated products, made by Ohio-based Great Lakes Cheese Co., were distributed across 31 states and Puerto Rico. While serious injuries are considered unlikely, the recall is rated Class II, meaning the cheese could cause temporary or medically reversible health problems if ingested.

What’s Being Recalled?

The bulk of the recall involves low-moisture part-skim mozzarella shredded cheese, totaling nearly 236,000 cases, with 4–12 bags per case. Other recalled products include:

  • Italian-style shredded cheese blends – 15,490 cases
  • Pizza-style shredded cheese blends – 4,298 cases
  • Mozzarella & provolone shredded blends – 4,131 cases
  • Happy Farms by Aldi Italian Style – 1,900 cases
  • Target’s Good & Gather mozzarella & parmesan – 1,850 cases
  • Food Club finely shredded pizza-style four-cheese blend – 117 cases

All recalled cheese carries sell-by dates from January through late March 2026.

Brands and Retailers Affected

Affected brands include Always Save, Borden, Brookshire’s, Cache Valley Creamery, Chestnut Hill, Coburn Farms, Econo, Food Club, Food Lion, Gold Rush Creamery, Good & Gather, Great Lakes Cheese, Great Value, Happy Farms by Aldi, H-E-B, Hill Country Fare, Know & Love, Laura Lynn, Lucerne Dairy Farms, Nu Farm, Publix, Schnuck’s, Simply Go, Sprouts Farmers Market, Stater Bros., and Sunnyside Farms.

Retailers confirmed the recall and are removing affected products immediately. Consumers are urged to discard or return any cheese that matches the UPC numbers listed in the FDA notice.

Prophetic Reflection

Even in ordinary matters like food safety, Scripture reminds us of vigilance: “Be sober-minded; be alert. Your adversary the devil prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour” (1 Peter 5:8, NASB 1977). While this recall may seem mundane, it’s a reminder that careful discernment is necessary in every aspect of daily life, including what we feed ourselves and our families.

Strategic Implications

This recall exposes vulnerabilities in large-scale food production and distribution chains. Retailers face potential financial and reputational consequences, and consumers must remain alert. Checking UPCs and sell-by dates is now critical for families nationwide.

Over 1 million shredded cheese bags sold across major U.S. retailers have been recalled due to metal contamination. Consumers in 31 states and Puerto Rico are urged to check, discard, or return affected cheese immediately. While injuries are unlikely, this recall demonstrates the importance of scrutiny, vigilance, and public safety oversight in food production.
