A top Russian lawmaker is calling for Halloween to be banned nationwide, claiming the Western holiday promotes Satanism, occultism, and the slow erosion of Russia’s moral and spiritual foundations.
Mikhail Ivanov, a member of Russia’s Civic Chamber and head of the Orthodox Russia movement, said in a fiery statement that Halloween “undermines the moral values on which our country has been built for centuries” and should be outlawed entirely. He warned that the growing popularity of the holiday among young Russians poses a serious threat to the nation’s Christian heritage.
“This so-called ‘holiday’ glorifies evil spirits and darkness,” Ivanov said. “We must create legal barriers to the aggressive promotion of alien ideologies disguised as harmless entertainment.”
A Western Export With a Dark Agenda
Ivanov argues that Halloween’s rise in Russia is part of a coordinated Western effort to infiltrate traditional societies through cultural subversion. “It is alien to our people and destructive to the fragile psyche of our youth,” he said, describing the celebration as a spiritual Trojan horse smuggling occultism into Russian homes and schools.
State media echoed his warning, calling Halloween a “spiritual infection” that glamorizes death and rebellion — values completely contrary to Orthodox Christianity. The lawmaker said he wants the promotion of Halloween legally equated with the propagation of Satanism.
A Nation on Guard Against Spiritual Decay
Ivanov’s proposal aligns with the Russian Orthodox Church’s growing concern over the spread of occult practices in modern Russia. Earlier this year, Archpriest Andrey Tkachev warned that “the Russian land is full of sorcerers” and that the nation “requires purification.”
According to Moscow newspaper MK, spending on esoteric services such as fortune-telling, spell-casting, and energy healing reached 2.4 trillion rubles ($24 billion) in 2024 — a staggering sign of the country’s moral drift.
For Ivanov and others, banning Halloween isn’t just about stopping kids from dressing up — it’s about protecting Russia from spiritual corruption.
Halloween’s Pagan Roots
The holiday traces its origins to the ancient Celtic festival of Samhain, when it was believed the dead could cross into the world of the living. The Roman Catholic Church later rebranded it as All Hallows’ Eve, but much of its pagan symbolism — ghosts, witches, and the glorification of darkness — endured.
Today’s Halloween, Ivanov says, represents the West’s rejection of faith and its fascination with the demonic.
A Clash Between Civilizations
While the Western world embraces Halloween as harmless fun, Russia’s Orthodox leaders see it as another front in the global spiritual war. It’s a war between nations defending their faith and heritage and those that have traded both for secularism and occult fascination.
In that sense, Ivanov’s proposed ban is not just cultural — it’s civilizational. Russia is openly positioning itself as a nation that stands against the “new Babylon” — a post-Christian global order intoxicated by rebellion and ritual darkness.
Prophetic Implications
Revelation 18 warns of the fall of Babylon — a system deceiving the nations through its “sorceries” (Greek: pharmakeia). As Western pop culture increasingly celebrates witchcraft, death, and demonic imagery under the guise of entertainment, nations like Russia are drawing a hard spiritual line.
Whether one agrees with Ivanov or not, his call reflects a broader prophetic divide now separating nations: those who still honor God, and those who openly glorify darkness.
