It will pass about 170 million miles from Earth — a safe distance, but close enough to study.
All four share the same striking emerald hue, caused by diatomic carbon (C₂) in their comas — a rare molecular signature that glows green when exposed to sunlight. Scientists say it’s simple chemistry. But some are asking: why now?
The Interstellar Mystery: 3I/ATLAS Spews Water Like a Fire Hose
NASA’s Swift telescope recently caught 3I/ATLAS doing something no one can explain — ejecting torrents of water into space at a rate of 88 pounds per second, even while still far from the Sun. Normally, comets must heat up near perihelion before releasing water vapor. Not this one. Astronomers are baffled. “Something else must be driving all the water dumping from 3I/ATLAS,” scientists wrote in The Astrophysical Journal Letters.
This comet didn’t originate here. It comes from deep interstellar space, beyond the reach of our solar neighborhood — yet it carries vast stores of water, perhaps even older than our own Sun.
