Tensions along the Pakistan-Afghanistan border erupted into deadly violence Saturday night, as Taliban forces claimed to have killed 58 Pakistani soldiers, injured 30 more, and captured 25 Pakistani border posts in a retaliatory operation following recent Pakistani airstrikes in Kabul.
Taliban Claims Retaliation
Zabihullah Mujahid, the Taliban government spokesman, announced the overnight strikes as a direct response to what he described as repeated violations of Afghan sovereignty by Pakistani forces.
According to Mujahid, “The Armed Forces of the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan tonight conducted a successful retaliatory operation against the centers of Pakistani forces along the Durand Line in response to the repeated violations of Afghanistan’s sovereignty by the Pakistani military and airstrikes on Afghanistan’s territory.”
The operation reportedly concluded around midnight, with Taliban officials warning that “if the Pakistani side violates Afghanistan’s sovereignty again, our armed forces are prepared to defend the country’s borders and will respond decisively.”
Pakistani Response and Border Firefights
Pakistani security officials confirmed clashes at multiple points along the 2,600 km (1,615-mile) border. They described the exchange of fire as a response to unprovoked firing from Afghanistan, asserting that they were acting “with full force” to defend Pakistani positions.
The incidents occurred after a recent Pakistani airstrike in Kabul targeting a vehicle believed to carry the leader of the Pakistani Taliban (TTP). Pakistan warned that its patience with Kabul had run out, accusing the Taliban administration of harboring militants who cross into Pakistan to conduct attacks — a charge Afghanistan denies.
Enayatullah Khowarazmi, spokesperson for Afghanistan’s Ministry of Defense, described the operation as a retaliatory strike and reiterated the Taliban’s readiness to respond strongly to any future violations.
