Scientists are raising the alarm over a potentially catastrophic scenario on the West Coast: the San Andreas Fault in California and the Cascadia Subduction Zone off the coasts of Oregon and Washington may be linked, capable of triggering successive earthquakes within hours. This “double quake” possibility could stretch emergency resources across multiple states—and even into Canada.
Linked Faults Could Magnify Disaster
A new study from Oregon State University analyzed ocean sediments and fault behavior, finding evidence that an earthquake on one fault could set off the other shortly after. While a single large quake already poses a serious disaster risk, simultaneous or near-simultaneous ruptures could overwhelm emergency responders and create cascading devastation along the West Coast.
Chris Goldfinger, marine geologist and lead author of the study, warned:
“We could expect that an earthquake on one of the faults alone would draw down the resources of the whole country to respond to it. And if they both went off together, then you’ve got potentially San Francisco, Portland, Seattle, and Vancouver all in an emergency situation in a compressed timeframe.”
A Call for Preparedness
Given the amplified risks, experts urge emergency planners and residents to take action now. Individuals are advised to:
- Prepare emergency kits with food, water, and essential supplies.
- Develop a family emergency plan for communication and evacuation.
- Stay informed about seismic alerts and local disaster procedures.
Goldfinger emphasized that even if this double-trigger scenario is rare, the consequences would be catastrophic. “We’re talking about multiple major cities being hit within hours. Emergency response could be stretched to the absolute limit,” he said.
Understanding the Faults
- San Andreas Fault: Stretches through California, historically producing large quakes like the 1906 San Francisco earthquake.
- Cascadia Subduction Zone: Offshore fault capable of generating magnitude 9+ earthquakes, with historic events recorded in geologic sediments.
This research underscores the importance of planning and preparation along the entire West Coast, from Northern California to British Columbia. Residents and authorities alike are being urged to act before the next major seismic event strikes.
