In what may be the most dangerous escalation of the Ukraine war to date, President Donald J. Trump’s decision to supply long-range Tomahawk cruise missiles to Ukraine has set off alarm bells across Europe, Moscow, and even Washington’s own military circles. The missiles, capable of reaching up to 1,600 miles and potentially carrying nuclear warheads, would put Moscow directly within range — a move that many analysts say could trigger direct confrontation between two nuclear superpowers.

Russia’s Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova echoed that sentiment, cautioning that any transfer of Tomahawks to Kiev “will cause irreparable damage to Russian-American relations.” Putin himself warned Trump that such a decision could destroy the fragile thaw that had begun to form between Moscow and Washington in recent months.
A Dangerous Game of Incremental Escalation
Ukrainian officials are treading carefully. Yehor Cherniev, deputy chairman of Ukraine’s National Security, Defense, and Intelligence Committee, told The Telegraph that deliveries could take months and would likely come in stages. He described a phased plan — a few missiles at first, with strict restrictions on their use — to gauge Moscow’s reaction before expanding operations. “At each of these stages, Putin is given the opportunity to retreat and go to negotiations,” Cherniev explained. “First they will give us rockets, but a few pieces… we will see the Kremlin’s reaction.”
In other words, the plan is to test how far Russia can be pushed without provoking nuclear escalation — a strategy that borders on madness in the eyes of many military analysts.
Typhon Launchers and the Shadow of Nuclear War
The inclusion of the U.S. Typhon ground-launch system marks another major shift. Originally a naval missile, the Tomahawk has been reconfigured into a mobile land-based weapon, capable of rapid deployment across Eastern Europe. This system was previously banned under the now-defunct Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces (INF) Treaty — the very agreement designed to prevent the deployment of such missiles on the European continent.
By reintroducing weapons once prohibited for their destabilizing potential, Washington risks reigniting Cold War-style brinkmanship — only this time with far less restraint and far more automation through AI-driven targeting systems.
