Nickel and Iron: A Cosmic Puzzle
In a yet-to-be-peer-reviewed study, an international team of astronomers analyzed data from the European Very Large Telescope’s Ultraviolet and Visual Echelle Spectrograph (UVES). They found that 3I/ATLAS exhibits an “extreme abundance ratio” of nickel and iron, unlike anything seen in solar system comets or the previous interstellar visitor, 2I/Borisov, in 2019.
The researchers note the baffling environmental conditions: “At the distances at which comets are observed, the temperature is far too low to vaporize silicate, sulfide, and metallic grains that contain nickel and iron atoms. Therefore, the presence of nickel and iron atoms in cometary coma is extremely puzzling.”

Across six spectral observations, nickel appeared consistently, while iron was only detected when the object drew closer than 2.64 astronomical units from the Sun—roughly two and a half times the Earth-Sun distance. Despite being carbon-depleted, the comet demonstrates extreme early-phase activity, producing metals at levels that challenge conventional physics.

Natural or Something Else?
Two explanations have been proposed: either 3I/ATLAS is inherently “metal-rich,” or its unusual chemistry allows “enhanced metal production due to chemical anomalies.” This fits with previous findings that the object has a strikingly high carbon dioxide to oxygen ratio.
Harvard astronomer Avi Loeb has urged closer observation using NASA’s Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter to better estimate the object’s size, which he suggests may be enormous—potentially more than 3.1 miles in diameter, wider than Manhattan Island. For comparison, the first interstellar visitor, 1I/`Oumuamua, was pancake-shaped and roughly 360 feet in diameter. “Why is the third interstellar object 3I/ATLAS a million times more massive than the first one?” Loeb asked, emphasizing the unprecedented scale.

While evidence points to a natural origin, Loeb warns scientists to remain open to surprises, including the “black swan” possibility that 3I/ATLAS could be a technological artifact sent from beyond our solar system. “Science is fun because we can learn something new from evidence, and not from past narratives dictated by the ‘adults in the room,’” he concludes.
