Israel faces a diplomatic gambit disguised as humanitarian aid. Egypt is reportedly seeking approval to bring heavy equipment into Gaza to clear rubble and “access the bodies of slain Israeli hostages.” On the surface this sounds humanitarian — but beneath it lies a dangerous tactic that could be used to prolong negotiations, obscure evidence, and give Hamas leverage. Israel should say no: insist Hamas reveal the locations of hostages and bodies now, or allow Israel’s own world‑leading recovery teams to do the job on Israeli terms.
A supposed rescue that smells like delay
Egypt has pushed for the entry of heavy machinery into Gaza as part of the pause-and-recovery discussions convened this week in Cairo. Egyptian officials and mediators say rubble removal may be necessary to reach hostages or recover remains.
But history and recent incidents counsel caution. Heavy equipment staged at border crossings has in the past been blocked, looted, or destroyed in the crossfire — and even when gear moved in, it didn’t guarantee truthful accounting of hostages or remains. Earlier in 2025, trucks carrying bulldozers and other construction equipment were seen queued at crossings and, on some occasions, were struck or otherwise rendered unusable.
Why Israel should refuse — and what to demand instead
This proposal is a strategic opening for delay and deception. Consider the risks:
- Allowing outsiders to clear wreckage risks tampering with or concealing evidence.
- Machinery and third‑party crews could be used to stage scenes for propaganda, complicating forensic verification.
- Opening crossings for heavy equipment becomes a bargaining chip that incentivizes Hamas to drag negotiations out in return for “access” or monitoring rights.
Israel is internationally recognized for its expertise in search-and-recovery and battlefield forensics. Rather than ceding access, Israel should insist that: Hamas provide precise coordinates and evidence of where hostages or bodies are located; independent neutral observers (ICRC or agreed forensic teams) be allowed immediate verification; or, if Hamas will not cooperate, Israel’s specialized recovery teams — operating under strict guarantees — should be permitted to conduct the work. These are reasonable demands that prioritize truth and the dignity of the victims over theatrics.
Humanitarian language can mask political objectives
Those who push for external heavy equipment often wrap the request in humanitarian rhetoric. But we’ve seen time and again how “humanitarian” provisions are used as leverage in asymmetric conflicts — tools to reset the clock, import foreign influence, and create alternative chains of custody that muddy accountability. The international community should not let humanitarianism become a cover for obfuscation.
Practical, dignified alternatives
If there is genuine urgency to recover remains, do it transparently and quickly: allow Israeli forensic and recovery experts to operate (with ICRC oversight if necessary), mandate full chains of custody, photograph and document every step, and require Hamas to provide immediate, verifiable intelligence on known burial sites. Anything less risks turning recovery into a political theater that benefits Hamas and harms the victims’ families.
A moral and strategic test
This is not a narrow operational debate — it’s a strategic and moral test for mediators and states positioning themselves as honest brokers. Will Egypt and other intermediaries press a course that preserves truth and accountability, or will they tolerate procedures that enable delay, manipulation, and propaganda?
Prophetic and geopolitical stakes
Beyond geopolitics, there’s a spiritual and moral dimension: nations that tolerate deception and manipulation under the guise of aid erode the very norms that protect the innocent. In prophetic terms, truth and justice remain the bulwarks against cycles of lawlessness and abuse.
Israel should protect both: refuse cosmetic “rubble diplomacy,” demand hard evidence, and insist on transparent, forensic recovery — or do the work itself. Anything else hands Hamas another bargaining chip and denies justice to the families of the slain.
