As the world watches the fragile ceasefire plan in Gaza, former U.S. Army Special Forces operator Jim Hanson warned Friday that Hamas’ statement regarding hostages and negotiations contains “poison pills” that could derail any lasting peace. Speaking on Fox Business’ The Evening Edit, Hanson emphasized that the terror group’s conditions and insistence on future governance integration raise serious red flags for the Trump administration’s plan.
Hamas Offers Hostages—but at What Cost?
Hamas publicly stated its willingness to release all remaining hostages and step aside under President Donald Trump’s ceasefire proposal—but only if Palestinian factions collectively agree and Arab and Islamic allies approve. Hanson noted that while the announcement may seem promising, Hamas is still tethered to an agenda rooted in terror, not genuine diplomacy.
“There are definitely a couple of poison pills in the Hamas statement,” Hanson said. “The biggest one is that the end state they anticipate is a unified Palestinian framework with Hamas completely involved. No, that’s not going to be the way it plays out.”
Hanson stressed that Hamas must lay down their weapons, renounce decades-long genocidal objectives against Israel, and accept that the Palestinian people are moving forward without their terror leadership.
Trump’s Deadline Looms
President Trump set a hard deadline of 6:00 p.m. EST Sunday for Hamas to agree to ceasefire terms, warning of an “overwhelming military response” if they fail to comply. Hanson reinforced that the group is not yet negotiating in good faith, and that recent provocations—including a drug-running vessel from Venezuela being destroyed in the Caribbean—serve as stark reminders that failure to comply could have dire consequences.
“They’ll release some hostages and then they’ll get to negotiations about the details,” Hanson said. “That’s not the time they were talking about. There are legitimate concerns that need to be addressed.”
Trump’s Plan: Stabilization and Oversight
Under the proposed framework, Hamas must release all hostages and surrender control of Gaza to an International Stabilization Force. Palestinian technocrats would advise the force, while Trump and former British Prime Minister Tony Blair would co-lead the effort. The plan aims to restore order, alleviate humanitarian suffering, and prevent Hamas from retaining leverage under the guise of governance.
UN reports show the stakes are staggering: over 33,000 displaced people in Gaza, with nearly one in four facing severe hunger amid continuous mass casualty events. Palestinians themselves are pressuring Hamas to accept the deal to halt ongoing destruction.
The Prophetic Dimension: Good Faith vs. Deception
Hanson’s warnings echo a broader, prophetic lesson: peace cannot be built on terror, deception, or selective compliance. Hamas’ insistence on control and integration is a stark reminder that wicked actors often offer surface-level concessions to mask hidden agendas—a principle echoed repeatedly in Scripture (Proverbs 21:28, Isaiah 8:10). The Trump administration’s hardline stance represents both a political and moral test: law, order, and justice must prevail over chaos and terror.
