For casual observers, Saturn can be easy to overlook. Unlike Venus or Jupiter, it doesn’t shine with blinding brilliance, nor does it have the fiery color of Mars. Instead, it appears as a steady, yellowish-white “star” to the naked eye. But Sunday night, Saturn’s proximity to the glowing moon makes it simple to locate. By around 8 p.m. local daylight time, look roughly a quarter of the way up from the horizon, and let the moon guide you straight to Saturn.

Check Out the Moon First
The moon will be just 98.5% illuminated — almost full — providing a brilliant, nearly flat face. Two impact craters stand out even to the naked eye: Tycho, located in the southern lunar highlands, with its striking rays of ejected material stretching across the lower limb, and Copernicus, slightly northwest of the lunar center, whose bright rays dominate the visible surface when sunlit. These features offer a great opportunity for casual observers and amateur astronomers alike to explore the moon’s fascinating surface before shifting their gaze to Saturn.

Then Turn Your Telescope to Saturn
Once you’ve marveled at the moon, it’s time to aim a telescope at Saturn, which sits less than “a quarter of a fist” (roughly 2.2 degrees) below the lunar orb. Saturn’s famous rings, though thin from our current perspective, are still visible. In March 2025, the rings appeared edge-on and were almost invisible. Since May, their tilt toward Earth has increased slightly, and now at 1.4 degrees, they appear as a bright, narrow line slicing across the planet’s disk.

Even a modest telescope with at least 30x magnification will reveal the rings tonight. Patience is key — in the coming years, the rings’ tilt will gradually increase, eventually reaching a maximum of 26.75 degrees in April 2032, making them appear broader and more spectacular. For amateur astronomers and seasoned stargazers alike, the slow unveiling of Saturn’s rings remains one of the most rewarding sights in the night sky.

A Cosmic Perspective
It’s worth noting that while the moon and Saturn appear close together in the sky, it’s an illusion of perspective. The moon orbits just 227,000 miles (365,000 km) from Earth, whereas Saturn is a staggering 797 million miles (1.283 billion km) away — more than 3,500 times farther. Yet, in the same eyepiece, the pair creates a truly memorable view, demonstrating the beauty and scale of our solar system.
