Chicago erupted into chaos Saturday morning as U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officers came under coordinated attack by what the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) described as “domestic terrorists.” Federal agents were rammed, boxed in, and assaulted by multiple vehicles before returning fire on an armed assailant, marking one of the most violent anti-ICE incidents in recent memory.
Coordinated Ambush Against Federal Agents
The confrontation unfolded near 40th Street and Kedzie Avenue in Chicago, roughly 15 miles from the ICE processing center in Broadview—a frequent target of left-wing agitators. According to DHS Assistant Secretary Tricia McLaughlin, federal agents’ vehicle was disabled after its tire was blown out, leaving officers vulnerable as a mob surrounded them with ten vehicles.
“Agents were rammed, boxed in, and assaulted with smoke, gas, rocks, and bottles,” McLaughlin wrote on X. “One of the drivers was armed with a semi-automatic weapon. Our brave law enforcement officers were forced to fire defensive shots.”
The suspect, identified as U.S. citizen Marimar Martinez, reportedly participated in online organizing efforts against ICE, including posting doxxed identities of agents and urging followers to “f*** them up.” Martinez was struck by defensive fire, drove herself to the hospital, and was later taken into DHS custody after being released.
Domestic Terror Cells Operating in Sanctuary Cities
The coordinated nature of the ambush has led DHS intelligence analysts to believe the incident may be part of a broader campaign by far-left domestic terror cells operating in sanctuary cities. McLaughlin confirmed that Martinez had been listed in a Customs and Border Protection bulletin just days prior for threatening federal agents online.
A second suspect, Anthony Ian Santos Ruiz, was also arrested after being identified as one of the drivers who helped trap the ICE vehicle. Officials report that Ruiz and Martinez were part of a caravan that had been surveilling federal operations in Chicago for several days.
“Thankfully, no law enforcement officers were seriously injured in this attack,” McLaughlin said. “However, Illinois Governor JB Pritzker’s Chicago Police Department refused to assist federal authorities in securing the area, forcing DHS to deploy special operations units to control the scene.”
Political War Between Trump and Pritzker Erupts
The violent confrontation comes amid intensifying tensions between President Donald Trump’s administration and Illinois’ Democratic governor, JB Pritzker, who continues to defy federal directives. Pritzker blasted what he called “unprecedented aggression” by the Trump administration, claiming the White House demanded he “call up troops or we will.”
Trump, through the Department of War, authorized 300 National Guard troops to protect ICE facilities, DHS personnel, and federal assets across the Chicago area. The move followed weeks of escalating violence at the Broadview ICE center, where Antifa-aligned groups have been holding nightly protests.
DHS Secretary Kristi Noem vowed that the administration would no longer tolerate attacks on immigration officers or the federal government’s authority. “We’re going to prosecute them and bring them to justice—we’re not taking this anymore,” she said.
