The city of Portland once again became the epicenter of violent unrest on Saturday as federal agents deployed tear gas and pepper balls to disperse Antifa militants outside the Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) detention center. The confrontation followed President Donald Trump’s activation of 200 National Guard troops to restore order and protect federal property amid escalating chaos.
Tear Gas, Helicopters, and Street Battles in Portland
According to footage shared by Freedom News on X, the violent clashes erupted when protesters advanced on the ICE facility and blocked its gates. Federal agents responded by deploying tear gas and pepper balls to push the mob back from the property line. Blackhawk helicopters circled overhead as law enforcement moved in to regain control of the area, following through on Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem’s pledge to reinforce federal resources in the Pacific Northwest.
Dozens of agitators—many dressed in black and carrying Antifa symbols—were seen lighting fires, waving anti-American banners, and chanting, “Whose Streets? Our Streets!” Protesters carried signs reading “Abolish ICE” and “Stop Hunting Our Neighbors,” with some comparing ICE to the Gestapo in a deliberate attempt to inflame tensions.
Multiple Arrests as Federal Forces Push Back
While exact numbers remain unclear, multiple arrests were made as federal agents moved in on the most aggressive rioters. Videos show agents tackling masked agitators, while others were dragged away in handcuffs as tear gas blanketed the area. Several protesters were seen burning American flags and throwing projectiles at officers.
The Portland ICE facility has been a recurring flashpoint since 2020, when radical groups began targeting it as a symbol of federal immigration enforcement. Despite years of unrest, the Biden-era “hands-off” approach to Antifa operations had left local law enforcement overwhelmed. The Trump administration’s renewed federal coordination marks the first major crackdown in the region since his return to office.
National Guard Deployment and the Restoration of Order
Last week, President Trump announced he had authorized 200 Oregon National Guard troops to support federal agents and local police. “The lawlessness ends now,” Trump declared, promising to restore order to cities that had become “safe havens for anarchists and agitators.”
Since the Guard’s deployment, Portland has seen nightly protests intensify, with violent elements attempting to provoke confrontation with federal forces. On Friday night, one protester was arrested after breaching the blue line marking federal property. Portland police later detained two additional individuals for blocking traffic and obstructing vehicles.
Thursday’s clashes also drew headlines after journalist Nick Sortor was arrested while defending himself from an Antifa assault. The Post Millennial’s Katie Daviscourt was similarly attacked earlier in the week by masked militants who accused her of “filming fascists.”
