GRAND BLANC, MI — Horror struck Grand Blanc, Michigan, today as a 40-year-old gunman from nearby Burton drove his vehicle into the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints on McCandlish Road, opened fire on parishioners, and deliberately set the building ablaze. At least two are confirmed dead, including the shooter, while eight others were hospitalized with gunshot wounds. Authorities fear more victims may still be trapped inside the burning church.
The Shooter and the Attack
Grand Blanc Township Police Chief William Renye revealed that the suspect acted alone, armed with an assault rifle. After ramming the church doors, he began firing on congregants before igniting the structure in a deliberate attempt to cause further carnage. Law enforcement, including an armed DNR agent, engaged the suspect, neutralizing him in the exchange of gunfire.
Chief Renye stated, “We believe some victims may have been unable to escape the fire. We have no idea at this time how many additional victims may still be inside.”
Emergency Response and Hospitalizations
Ten victims were transported to local hospitals. One has succumbed to their injuries inflicted by the gunman. Firefighters responded immediately, escalating to a four-alarm blaze to contain the fire and conduct search-and-rescue operations.
The FBI is actively assisting local law enforcement in the ongoing investigation, as officials scramble to determine motive, recover victims, and secure the area.
Community in Shock
Witnesses described scenes of chaos as the gunman barreled into the church and opened fire. “It was complete horror,” one congregant said. “People were running, screaming, trying to get out. It’s something you never expect in a place of worship.”
Officials are urging residents to stay away from the area and allow emergency crews to continue their search safely.
A Broader Threat to Houses of Worship
This tragic attack joins a disturbing pattern of violence targeting religious institutions nationwide. The deliberate arson after the mass shooting raises new concerns about security vulnerabilities and the ability of first responders to contain heavily armed threats inside public buildings.
Ongoing Investigation
Authorities continue to search the church for additional victims while piecing together the shooter’s motive. Chief Renye emphasized the gravity of the situation: “Our thoughts are with the victims, their families, and the first responders who risked their lives to stop this tragedy. We will continue to investigate fully and provide answers to the people of Grand Blanc.”
The community remains on edge as news unfolds, praying for survivors and grieving those lost in a massacre that has shaken Michigan to its core.
