Astronomers are riveted by a colossal interstellar visitor hurtling through the solar system at a mind-bending speed. Dubbed 3I/ATLAS, this enigmatic object is only the third confirmed interloper from beyond our solar system, following the discoveries of ‘Oumuamua in 2017 and 2I/Borisov in 2019. But 3I/ATLAS is turning heads not just because of its origin—it’s massive, mysterious, and may challenge everything we think we know about cosmic wanderers.
A Giant Among Interstellar Objects
Early observations revealed that 3I/ATLAS is unusually rich in carbon dioxide, setting it apart from typical comets. Now, Harvard astrophysicist Avi Loeb has determined that its mass is far greater than initially estimated. By analyzing its trajectory and the subtle “non-gravitational acceleration” caused by outgassing, Loeb inferred that 3I/ATLAS weighs more than 33 billion tons, with a solid core exceeding 3.1 miles in diameter.
To put that into perspective, it is three to five orders of magnitude more massive than ‘Oumuamua and 2I/Borisov, making it a true behemoth in the realm of interstellar objects. Loeb notes the statistical oddity of its detection: “Given the limited reservoir of heavy elements, we should have discovered on the order of a hundred thousand interstellar objects on the 0.1-kilometer scale of 1I/’Oumuamua before finding 3I/ATLAS, yet we only detected two interstellar objects previously.”
A Trajectory That Raises Eyebrows
3I/ATLAS isn’t just massive; its path is highly unusual. It will pass within just 1.67 million miles of Mars’ orbit, brushing perilously close to the orbits of Jupiter and Venus. Loeb describes the precision of its trajectory as “remarkable fine-tuning,” providing a rare opportunity for NASA’s Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter to capture high-resolution images with its HiRISE camera.
These observations could help determine its exact size and composition, offering clues to its origin. Loeb emphasizes that if the object’s core exceeds 3.1 miles, its formation from normal interstellar rocky material becomes increasingly unlikely.
Alien Technology?
Loeb does not shy away from speculation: could 3I/ATLAS be artificial in origin, perhaps a probe sent by an advanced extraterrestrial civilization? “Is 3I/ATLAS an unusually massive comet with an unusual chemical composition on an unusually rare trajectory or alien technology?” he asks.
Even if it is natural, the object’s sheer size, composition, and trajectory make it an extraordinary find—one that could reshape our understanding of interstellar objects. Loeb cautions against judging the object solely by its surface composition: “We should not decide about the nature of 3I/ATLAS based on the chemical composition of its skin—for the same reason that we should not judge a book by its cover.”

As 3I/ATLAS speeds toward Mars, it offers a rare window into the deep cosmos, a reminder of how little we know about the galaxy’s hidden reaches.
