Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem expressed outrage after a cryptic and menacing tweet from California Governor Gavin Newsom’s press office over the weekend appeared to threaten her personally.
The tweet read:
“Kristi Noem is going to have a bad day today. You’re welcome, America.”
The statement immediately drew condemnation from both federal officials and political observers. Tricia McLaughlin, Assistant Secretary at DHS, blasted Newsom’s team on X, writing:
“This reads like a threat. This is ugly, @GavinNewsom. Your keyboard warrior team may hide behind their laptops and spew this kind of vitriol, but you would never have the guts to say this to her face.”
Acting U.S. Attorney for the Central District of California, Bill Essayli, quickly intervened, emphasizing that threats against senior government officials—veiled or direct—will not be tolerated. Essayli confirmed that the matter had been referred to the Secret Service for a full threat assessment, stating:
“We have zero tolerance for direct or implicit threats against government officials. I’ve referred this matter to Secret Service and requested a full threat assessment.”
Shortly after, Newsom’s press office attempted to downplay the incident with a follow-up tweet, framing the original message as related to a new immigration legislation package:
“TODAY: Governor Newsom signs a historic legislation package to protect immigrant communities, hold Trump accountable.”
Noem responded to the tweet’s chilling tone, explaining the immediate impact on her and her family:
“Well, it was cryptic, and it was really menacing. I would say, Sean, it immediately panicked my family and friends. Within, I would say, a couple of minutes of that being posted, I started to get text messages and phone calls—family, my kids—saying, ‘Are you okay, Mom? Are you fine?’ They know the threats that I’ve had.”
Noem emphasized the dangerous real-world consequences of such rhetoric:
“When you get a post like that by a governor, immediately my staff and family think, ‘What is going on? What does he mean?’ We’re trying to figure it out. This is a day and age where we’ve always known that words matter, but now we’ve realized there are real consequences—things that have happened to incredible people like Charlie—that we’ll have to live with forever.”
The DHS Secretary called for a return to civil discourse and accountability:
“I hope we all learn from that. I hope we all learn that it’s time to start listening to each other, having civil discussions, and stopping ridiculous, irresponsible posts like the one Governor Newsom put out there.”
This incident highlights the dangers of politically charged rhetoric and the real-world consequences of veiled threats, particularly when directed at senior officials. Critics are now demanding clearer boundaries for political communications from government offices to prevent similar incidents in the future.
