In a shocking revelation from her new memoir 107 Days, former vice president and failed presidential candidate Kamala Harris disclosed that Pete Buttigieg was her first choice for running mate in the 2024 campaign — but she ultimately passed on him because he is gay.
Harris writes that while she admired Buttigieg, calling him “an ideal partner,” she felt that pairing their identities on the ticket would ask “a lot of America”:
“To accept a woman, a Black woman … and a gay man.”
The revelation, reported this week by The Atlantic and the Associated Press, has sparked immediate criticism, highlighting a stark contrast between Harris’s public advocacy for representation and her private calculations regarding electability.
Political analysts argue that this admission exposes a glaring hypocrisy in Harris’s approach to diversity. John Harrison, a longtime political commentator, stated:
“Kamala Harris has spent her career telling Americans to embrace representation, but when she had the power to act, she bowed to fear. It’s hard not to see this as hypocrisy—preaching inclusion publicly while calculating against it privately.”
Critics note that Harris’s decision effectively sidelined Buttigieg because of the very identity she has long championed, undermining her narrative of breaking barriers and promoting equity in American politics.
“So much for breaking barriers—when it counted, Harris made sure the glass ceiling stayed firmly in place,” one commentator wrote.
The memoir’s revelations come at a time when questions about authenticity and political strategy are dominating discussions about the 2024 election cycle. Voters and pundits alike are examining whether public champions of diversity are willing to make bold choices when political risk is involved.
Harris’s candid admission may have lasting implications for her political credibility, especially among voters who valued her as a symbol of progress and representation.
