California has officially broken from decades of reliance on federal vaccine guidance, passing a sweeping new law that allows the state to create its own immunization schedules while mandating taxpayer funding for transgender treatments and abortions. Governor Gavin Newsom signed Assembly Bill 144 (AB 144) on Wednesday, hailing it as a step toward “independence from Washington,” while critics warn it represents a dangerous precedent of state-sanctioned medical authoritarianism.
California Declares Independence From the CDC
For decades, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has set the nation’s vaccine schedules, providing uniform guidance to states and insurers. But AB 144 now empowers the California Department of Public Health to ignore the CDC and instead adopt recommendations from private professional groups such as the American Academy of Pediatrics and the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists.
This move comes as the Trump administration, led by Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr., has overhauled the CDC by firing top officials, disbanding committees stacked with vaccine industry loyalists, and stripping away recommendations for pregnant women and healthy children. Kennedy has called his reforms “the first step in eliminating politics from science,” while ousted CDC chief Susan Monarez warned Congress that U.S. public health is headed into “a very dark place.”
West Coast Health Alliance Pushes Back Against Trump and Kennedy
California’s break from the CDC coincides with the launch of the “West Coast Health Alliance,” a bloc of California, Oregon, Washington, and Hawaii designed to create regional medical guidelines in defiance of federal recommendations. On Wednesday, the alliance issued its own joint vaccine schedule for COVID-19, flu, and RSV, recommending shots for infants as young as six months, pregnant and postpartum women, seniors, and adults with risk factors.
Supporters, including Stanford and UC Berkeley medical professors, praised the alliance for “standing up to political interference,” while opponents warn that bypassing the CDC undermines national standards and fuels further chaos in public health policy.
Mandates, Liability Waivers, and State Control
Beyond vaccines, AB 144 contains other sweeping provisions. It mandates that California insurers must cover all state-recommended vaccines at no cost to patients within 15 days of approval. It also extends liability protections for doctors, pharmacies, and manufacturers against vaccine-related injury lawsuits until 2030 — a move critics say gives pharmaceutical companies a free pass at the expense of patient safety.
Most controversially, the bill directs state funding toward transgender medical treatments and abortions, cementing California’s role as a national hub for progressive health mandates. Conservatives argue this represents not only state overreach but also a direct violation of religious liberty and conscience protections.
A Clash Between Trump’s America and Newsom’s California
The law underscores a growing medical and political civil war between Washington and progressive strongholds. While Florida is moving to end all vaccine mandates, including for schoolchildren, California is doubling down with new mandates, expanded liability protections, and taxpayer-funded transgender and abortion services.
