The Pentagon has deployed eight warships, multiple surveillance aircraft, a submarine, and elite Special Operations forces to the southern Caribbean, alongside 10 F-35 stealth fighters stationed in Puerto Rico. Officials claim the force is targeting drug-smuggling networks. However, former Southern Command chief Adm. James Stavridis told reporters,

“The massive naval flotilla and deployment of fifth-generation F-35 fighters have little to do with actual drug interdiction — they represent operational overkill. This is gunboat diplomacy, sending a clear message to Maduro.”

Democratic lawmakers have denounced the strikes as potentially illegal. Rep. Jim Himes (D-CT), top Democrat on the House Intelligence Committee, called the attacks “morally reprehensible and strategically unsound”, warning they could worsen the very drug problems they are claimed to address. Congressional Democrats, including Rep. Adam Smith, have pressed Pentagon officials for justification and details about future operations, but received minimal information beyond claims of “self-defense.”

Guided-missile destroyers, including the U.S.S. Jason Dunham, U.S.S. Gravely, and U.S.S. Sampson, join the campaign, armed with surface-to-air and anti-submarine capabilities. The U.S.S. Lake Erie and littoral combat ships round out a force capable of both interdiction and deterrence.
