Vice President Kamala Harris recently inserted herself into the fallout over Jimmy Kimmel’s shocking comments about the assassination of conservative activist Charlie Kirk, only to have her critique blow up spectacularly in her face.
Kimmel’s Controversial Remarks
On Monday night, Kimmel used his late-night platform to claim that a “MAGA Republican” was responsible for Kirk’s murder and accused conservatives of exploiting the tragedy for political gain.
“We hit some new lows over the weekend with the MAGA gang desperately trying to characterize this kid who murdered Charlie Kirk as anything other than one of them and doing everything they can to score political points from it,” Kimmel asserted.
FCC Chairman Brendan Carr responded swiftly, telling Benny Johnson on The Benny Show that the network faced serious consequences:
“This is a very, very serious issue right now for Disney. We can do this the easy way or the hard way… They have a license granted by us at the FCC, and that comes with an obligation to operate in the public interest.”
Following the warning, Nexstar announced that all 32 of its ABC broadcast affiliates would preempt “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” indefinitely, citing his remarks as “offensive and insensitive.”
Harris Steps In — and Gets Exposed
On Thursday, Harris slammed the Trump administration for allegedly bullying media organizations:
“What we are witnessing is an outright abuse of power. This administration is attacking critics and using fear as a weapon to silence anyone who would speak out. Media corporations — from television networks to newspapers — are capitulating to these threats. We cannot dare to be silent or complacent in the face of this frontal assault on free speech. We, the People, deserve better.”
But her argument did not age well. X users quickly unearthed a post from her first presidential campaign, where she advocated for removing President Trump from X/Twitter for what she deemed “bad, harmful behavior.”
“Let’s be honest, you’re still not listening to the American people… We cancelled Jimmy cuz he lied and spewed hate speech. We are no longer accepting bad, harmful behavior… It will stop. I’m sorry, but was this you?” one X user pointed out.
The irony was immediate and glaring: Harris, who now rails against “silencing critics,” had previously called for the censorship of political opponents on social media.
The Public Reaction
X users were quick to highlight the hypocrisy, flooding her account with screenshots and quotes from her old post. The episode underscores a broader pattern of left-wing double standards on free speech: advocating censorship when convenient, then decrying enforcement when applied to their allies.
As the debate over Kimmel continues, Harris’s credibility on free speech issues has been severely undermined. Conservatives and independents alike see this as another example of political elites weaponizing principles selectively.
The takeaway is clear: in today’s hyper-partisan media climate, hypocrisy is never hidden for long, and Harris’s attempt to lecture the Trump administration on media intimidation has only amplified criticism of her own record.
