Newly released documents reveal the FBI’s post-2020 election probe codenamed “Arctic Frost” cast a sweeping net over nearly 100 Republican-linked organizations and individuals, including Turning Point USA, the youth activist group co-founded by slain conservative leader Charlie Kirk. The files, published Tuesday by Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa), show the investigation was far broader than previously acknowledged, encompassing partisan Republican operations across the country.

Arctic Frost: Beyond Trump

Grassley emphasized that Arctic Frost was not just about former President Trump:

“Arctic Frost wasn’t just a case to politically investigate Trump. It was the vehicle by which partisan FBI agents and DOJ prosecutors could achieve their partisan ends and improperly investigate the entire Republican political apparatus.”

The probe began in April 2022 and scrutinized at least 92 Republican-aligned entities, including the Republican National Committee, the Republican Attorneys General Association, and Trump political groups. Turning Point USA was explicitly mentioned on the FBI’s “political list,” though the precise focus on the organization remains unclear.

The investigation examined alleged false election fraud claims, fake elector schemes, frivolous lawsuits, financial fraud, and alleged pressure on state officials to overturn vote counts. Documents also reference “J6 $,” likely alluding to groups that supported Trump’s “Stop the Steal” rally or participated in the Jan. 6, 2021 Capitol riot.

Special Counsel Jack Smith Steps In

By November 2022, Arctic Frost was handed over to Special Counsel Jack Smith, who later charged Trump with unlawful retention of national security documents at Mar-a-Lago and alleged attempts to overturn the 2020 election. However, none of Smith’s cases went to trial before Trump’s 2024 re-election, and all were ultimately dismissed.

High-Profile Figures Swept Up

Other targets of the investigation included Trump PACs and fundraising committees, former Mayor Rudy Giuliani, and ex-DOJ official Jeffrey Clark. According to the FBI files, Clark was scrutinized for allegedly misrepresenting DOJ findings about the 2020 election and for his financial records. Clark, now the OMB regulatory czar, confirmed via X that the documents proved he was “targeted” for his work at the Justice Department.

The probe was run in coordination with the National Archives, DOJ Office of Inspector General, and the U.S. Postal Service, highlighting the multi-agency effort to scrutinize Republican political operations in the wake of the 2020 election.

Charlie Kirk and the Broader Fallout

Charlie Kirk, 31, was tragically shot and killed at a TPUSA event on Sept. 10, 2025. In the aftermath, Republicans including Vice President JD Vance and White House deputy chief of staff Stephen Miller have called for a crackdown on left-wing groups promoting violence, underscoring the tense and partisan environment surrounding the Arctic Frost revelations.

The documents shed light on a wider pattern of partisan overreach, with the FBI allegedly leveraging investigations to monitor and intimidate conservative organizations nationwide.
