Affiliates Hold Kimmel Show Hostage, Will Only Release Once He Apologizes to Erika Kirk

Jimmy Kimmel has made a career out of mocking conservatives, Christians, and anyone who refuses to bow to Hollywood’s groupthink. But this time, he may have gone too far — and the people holding the power to bring him back on the air aren’t Republican politicians, social media mobs, or even his ABC bosses. It’s the affiliate stations that carry his late-night show — and they’ve drawn a hard line in the sand: no apology, no show.

Kimmel’s Lie About Charlie Kirk’s Murderer

In his Monday night monologue, Kimmel claimed that the suspect who murdered Charlie Kirk was a “conservative,” mocking those on the right as trying to “spin” the shooting to score political points. In reality, the accused shooter, Tyler Robinson, was a leftist. This wasn’t just a careless slip — it was an intentional smear, delivered while the family of Charlie Kirk was still grieving. Kimmel even took a cheap shot at President Donald Trump’s grief over the loss of his friend: “This is not how an adult grieves the murder of someone he called a friend. This is how a 4-year-old mourns a goldfish.”

The backlash was immediate. FCC Chairman Brendan Carr blasted Kimmel for his reckless rhetoric, and by Wednesday ABC had announced that Jimmy Kimmel Live! was being “pre-empted indefinitely.”

Affiliates Take Control

Normally, this kind of “indefinite suspension” is just a Hollywood timeout. A few weeks in hiding, a half-hearted apology, and the host quietly returns to business as usual. But this time, the local affiliates — the lifeblood of broadcast television — aren’t playing along.

Jason Smith, vice chairman of Sinclair Broadcast Group, the largest ABC affiliate owner in America, didn’t mince words:

“Mr. Kimmel’s remarks were inappropriate and deeply insensitive at a critical moment for our country. We believe broadcasters have a responsibility to educate and elevate respectful, constructive dialogue in our communities.”

Sinclair announced that it would not air Jimmy Kimmel Live! on any of its stations until Kimmel issues a direct apology to Erika Kirk and her family. They also demanded he make a personal donation to the Kirk family and Turning Point USA. In the meantime, Sinclair will air a tribute to Charlie Kirk in place of Kimmel’s show.

Nexstar Joins the Revolt

Nexstar Media Group, which operates another major block of ABC affiliates, signaled the same sentiment. Andrew Alford, president of Nexstar’s broadcasting division, called Kimmel’s comments “offensive and insensitive at a critical time in our national political discourse” and said they didn’t reflect the values of Nexstar’s local communities.

Between Sinclair and Nexstar, more than 60 of ABC’s 250 affiliates have effectively cut Kimmel off. That’s roughly a quarter of the country — gone. And without their buy-in, ABC is left holding a $16 million-a-year liability in Kimmel’s contract for a show that might not even reach one in four households.

Apologize or Disappear

The economics of late-night television are already shaky, with most programs hemorrhaging money and struggling to compete with streaming. For ABC to bankroll a host who can’t be carried in 25 percent of markets — on top of the 50 percent of America he’s alienated with his political stridency — would be corporate malpractice.

That leaves Kimmel with a simple choice: issue a full-throated apology to Erika Kirk and her family, or watch his career evaporate. Either way, the spectacle exposes just how fragile Hollywood’s smug moralizing has become when confronted by reality.

Kimmel lied about the death of a husband and father of two, smeared half the country in the process, and mocked the grief of a sitting president. What did he think would happen? For once, America’s local broadcasters are holding the elites accountable — and it’s a reckoning long overdue.
