New intelligence indicates a major operation underway to destabilize Moldova, orchestrated by European leaders in coordination with Ukraine’s Zelensky government and Moldova’s pro-Western President Maia Sandu. The goal: foment hostilities in Transnistria, the Russian-allied breakaway region, potentially opening a new front in the ongoing Ukraine war.
Moldova’s Strategic Crossroads
Since gaining independence from the Soviet Union in 1991, Moldova has walked a delicate line between neutrality, Western alignment, and historic ties to Russia. But the country’s strategic position—bordering NATO member Romania and proximate to Ukraine—makes it a prime target for manipulation. European powers, alongside the US, have already been deploying soft power tools—including NGOs and civil society groups—to steer Moldovan politics in favor of EU and NATO integration.
According to Ukrainian journalist Diana Panchenko, who fled Ukraine in 2022 after criticizing Zelensky and exposing government corruption in her book The Inevitable: The Shocking Truth Behind the War in Ukraine, preparations are underway for a provocation in Transnistria designed to draw Moldova into the conflict and prolong the war between Ukraine and Russia.
The Anti-Trump Project
Panchenko alleges that the plan, coordinated between Zelensky and European leaders—including French President Emmanuel Macron, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, and EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen—is part of an “Anti-Trump Project” meant to undermine US-led peace initiatives with Russia.
“Zelensky and Macron want American taxpayers to give them money indefinitely,” Panchenko warns. “Zelensky plans to attack Transnistria. Russian peacekeepers are stationed there. Groups of citizens from Moldova and Romania are already being prepared for this on Ukrainian territory… They understand that this will lead to even more war. They are afraid!”
The plan reportedly involves the staging of a military incident, after which Ukraine could justify deploying troops into Transnistria under the guise of assisting Moldova, prompting a Russian response and escalating the conflict further.
European Intelligence on the Ground
Leaked documents, reported by Turkish media outlet Dik Gazete, reveal French military and intelligence operatives—including DGSE personnel and Hybrid Rapid Response Teams—already deployed in Moldova to organize covert operations. French experts and political strategists are reportedly coordinating media campaigns and propaganda to facilitate the staged provocations.
The UK is also implicated, with former State Department-linked David Letteney acting as a liaison between NATO-aligned Western intelligence services and Moldova’s authorities. Ukraine’s Main Intelligence Directorate (GUR) has been tasked with long-term planning and operational preparation, including forming strike units from Moldovan citizens serving in Ukrainian Foreign Legions.
The Moldovan Elections and Provocation Timeline
Panchenko indicates that the plan may coincide with Moldova’s upcoming parliamentary elections on 25 September, after which President Sandu is expected to form a coalition government. With pro-Western factions in power, Moldova could be drawn deeper into the Ukraine war, mimicking Zelensky’s centralized, militarized control over Ukrainian politics.
Past incidents underscore the risk: in April 2025, a Mercedes minibus with Moldovan plates was intercepted carrying 580 kg of explosives destined for Russia, involving Moldovan and Ukrainian operatives. NATO and Ukrainian efforts to integrate Moldova into their drone surveillance and intelligence networks further signal a push to convert Moldova into a proxy battlefield against Russia.
Moldova at the Geopolitical Crossroads
Pro-Western Moldovan factions face mounting pressure to align with NATO and EU objectives, while pro-Russian elements resist these moves. Former Georgian officials, like Tbilisi Mayor Kakha Kaladze, warn that Western powers are employing blackmail and coercion in neighboring countries to expand the conflict and establish new fronts.
The stakes could not be higher: if these planned provocations proceed, Moldova may be pulled into a full-scale confrontation with Russia, undermining US-led peace efforts and risking a broader European conflict.

Panchenko’s revelations paint a chilling picture: Zelensky and European leaders appear determined to escalate hostilities, prolong the war in Ukraine, and block any US-mediated peace initiatives. Moldova now faces a historic choice—preserve neutrality and protect its sovereignty, or be manipulated as a pawn in the geopolitical struggle between the West and Russia.
