Newly released communications provide chilling insight into Tyler Robinson, the 22-year-old arrested for the assassination of Turning Point USA founder Charlie Kirk. According to screenshots shared with The New York Times, Robinson joked that his “doppelganger” had committed the murder in the hours following the killing, revealing a disturbing mix of detachment, bravado, and awareness of the investigation.
Discord Messages Show Flippant Demeanor
Robinson’s Discord messages, exchanged with acquaintances shortly after Kirk’s death, show him closely following news reports. One user tagged Robinson with FBI-released surveillance images of a suspect, asking “wya” (where you at?) with a skull emoji. Robinson replied within a minute, claiming a “doppelganger” was trying to “get me in trouble.”
When another user joked, “Tyler killed Charlie!!!!” Robinson made no denial, instead continuing the playful, yet unsettling banter. He also joked about disposing of a rifle and manifesto, seemingly aware of the seriousness of his actions, yet treating them with flippancy. At one point, he wrote, “I’m actually Charlie Kirk, wanted to get outta politics so I faked my death, now I can live out my dream life in Kansas.”
Following the News, Mocking the Investigation
Robinson tracked reports about the rifle and ammunition recovered at the scene, which reportedly included engravings referencing transgender ideology and antifascist symbolism. He commented in Discord, “I heard the ammo had somethin about trans stuff on it, but they aren’t releasing photos or exact quotes… and also the claim wasn’t backed by the official FBI, just some dude in the briefing room.”
Family Intervention and Confession
Authorities confirm that Robinson eventually confessed to the killing. A family member and a family friend encouraged him to turn himself in, which he did at his home in Southwestern Utah, more than three hours from the Utah Valley University campus where Kirk was shot. Utah Governor Spencer Cox noted that Robinson’s roommate — actually his transgender boyfriend — was cooperating fully with authorities and “shocked” by the events.
Political and Ideological Context
Robinson’s messages and lifestyle have fueled ongoing debate about the role of ideology in the attack. While the suspect was registered to vote and his parents are Republican, Gov. Cox stated that Robinson held a “leftist ideology.” Conservative commentators warn that the shooting may reflect a broader radicalization trend targeting pro-family, pro-American voices.

Robinson is expected to be formally charged by local prosecutors, with federal charges likely to follow.
