The New York Times buried the murder until weeks later, finally covering it under the headline: “A Gruesome Murder in North Carolina Ignites a Firestorm on the Right.” Politico framed it as a “political messaging war,” while Axios reduced Zarutska’s death to nothing more than a narrative about “MAGA’s crime message.”

White House Rebukes Media Silence

White House Press Secretary Karolina Leavitt blasted the press corps for ignoring the story until it became impossible to hide. “Perhaps most shamefully of all, the majority of media — many outlets in this room — decided that her murder was not worth reporting on originally, because it does not fit a preferred narrative,” Leavitt said Tuesday.

The reality is that had the races been reversed — with a white man killing a minority woman — the media would have launched wall-to-wall coverage, complete with demands for national conversations on race and hate crimes.
